Standing at the top of the key, Tokay forward Lynice Schallberger picked a path and took it.

The Tokay senior drove down the middle of the lane and banked in a go-ahead layup with under a minute left as the Tigers pulled away for a 52-44 victory over Ponderosa on Monday night.

Schallberger's bucket put the Tigers up 45-43 with 51 seconds remaining in the game and fueled a 9-1 Tokay run in the closing seconds. Olympia Lopez robbed the Bruins on the possession following Schallberger's basket, getting her hands on a loose ball and finding Rachael Hernandez on a fast break.

Hernandez, who finished with a game-high 20 points, drew a foul and sank her two free throws to cushion Tokay's lead. Schallberger hit four more free throws and Kelsey McCarty added another to seal the win for Tokay (3-5).

Ponderosa (6-5) had its chances to get back in the game late, but couldn't cash in on layups. Even when the Bruins pulled down offensive rebounds, they failed to sink their second-chance attempts.

"We need to capitalize on our easy shots," Ponderosa head coach Noel O'Donnell said. "We missed a lot of easy shots and we didn't match-up very well man-to-man when we needed to at the end."

Despite 20 points from Hernandez, 12 from Schallberger and six apiece from McCarty and Tori Schallberger, it was Alyssa Whitson who drew Tokay head coach Cip Sanchez's praise after the game. Whitson grabbed three offensive rebounds in the closing minutes that gave the Tigers some key second chances. She finished with eight rebounds and two points.

"When she was in there, she was getting everything on both sides," Sanchez said of Whitson. "She really came through for us. Even when we were struggling, she got rebounds at critical moments."

After finding themselves down 16-9 at the end of the first quarter, Hernandez led the Tigers' comeback charge in the second. She scored seven points in the frame as Tokay took a 24-22 advantage into halftime.

The sophomore guard then got even hotter in the third quarter, hitting three 3-pointers, two of which came back-to-back, to put Tokay up 39-33 late in the third.

"Once someone makes a 3-pointer, our momentum gets up and we start going and have less turnovers," Hernandez said. "After the 3s, we were all in it and ready to go."

Tokay was able to overcome being outscored at the free-throw line 16-7 and having trouble with Ponderosa's full-court pressure defense that caused 13 first-half turnovers. Sanchez said the game was a must-win for the Tigers, who had lost three in a row entering the contest.

"I think they did much better listening than the last games we've had at tournaments," Sanchez said of his players.

Tokay will be back in action this weekend Tracy/West Jamboree.
