Big rig hits, kills sea lion on Interstate 5 west of Lodi
A wayward sea lion was struck by a big rig and killed on Interstate 5 west of Lodi early Monday morning.
California Highway Patrol Officer Adrian Quintero said the driver of the truck said he heard a loud thump as he was driving south on the interstate about a half mile north of Turner Road.
"He thought he may have hit a cow," Quintero said.
The driver, Larry Manry, 56, of Los Molinos, stopped his truck and pulled over and quickly realized he had actually hit a sea lion. Several other drivers also called CHP about the animal at around 5:30 a.m.
Quintero said CHP had to contact the California Department of Transportation, which dispatched a crew of four workers and a piece of heavy equipment, to remove the carcass from the road.
The cleanup closed the right lane of southbound I-5 until 6:48 a.m. While it's not unheard of for marine mammals to make their way inland from the Bay through the Delta, Quintero said it's rather unusual for the Lodi/Stockton area.
"It's very rare for our area for something like this to happen," he said. "The animal may have been disorientated or confused."
After CalTrans cleared the carcass from the roadway, Quintero said the agency was going to work with the Marine Mammal Center of Marin County to dispose of the remains.
Quintero said the animal was struck while crossing the interstate. The impact dented the front bumper of the truck. Quintero said Manry was not cited.
