Man loses control; hits two houses, trees

By News-Sentinel Staff
Monday, December 8, 2008 6:13 AM PST

A 67-year-old man lost control of his car, backed into his garage door and hit two other houses and a fence, parked pick-up truck and two city-owned trees, according to Lodi police.

Frederick Hirsch backed his pick-up truck into his garage door, knocking it off the track at 6:45 p.m. Friday in the 1600 block of Blackbird Place, police said. He then tried to put his truck into neutral, but it went into "drive" instead and sped across the street, hitting a house, fence and a city tree, police said.

Hirsch's truck then sped across the street again, this time hitting a parked pick-up truck, house, fence and city tree before coming to rest, police said.

The pick-up truck was impounded for inspection, police said. No one was injured. No information on damage was available.

" oh, educated reader; it was a u-turn.
From May 6, 2004 article in LNS... "Rick Cromwell, who had been with the department for 10 years, was riding his motorcycle on Kettleman Lane when he turned to chase a speeding motorist. A car pulled out in front of him, killing the officer."
I know over the years the lights and siren have been turned on, and the u-turn forgotten. But memory will often trump those who've been "re-educated." "

" As far as Driving Habits, Senior Citizen Drivers are the least of our worries. The vast majority are fine drivers and it is puzzling how they always get picked on. What about those chase scenes on TV? I cannot remember ever seeing a Senior's car "Spiked" by the CHP. 20-20 Hindsight in Lodi! I guess it is everywhere. "

" I would also support raising the driving age to 18. An automobile is just as deadly a weapon as a fire arm.

If you are too young to buy a .22 you should be too young to operate a 5 ton Ford Apocalypse SUV. "

It is a proven fact that motor skills deteriorates as a person gets older. I don't think it is too much to ask people over 65 to prove that they are capable of operating a motor vehicle safely.

Remember, driving is a privilege, not a right. "

" I can't tell you the number of elderly drivers I've seen blow through the stop sign near my house. It's funny too, because I doubt they just moved to town. The stop sign has been there for decades and yet they still blow right through it. There are a quite a bit of accidents and I do see LPD watching for it a lot, but it's still a problem. "

" Dogs, you are mistaken. The motor officer was traveling east on Kettleman while pursuing a speeding vehicle when an elderly driver pulled out of the shopping center exit by Burger King. The elderly driver was making a left turn onto Kettleman and the motor officer tried to evade his vehicle. In case you haven't noticed, that's why Kettleman is now a divided road along that section. Also, someone please correct me if my memory is faulty, a jury found the "senior" citizen at fault and he was convicted of involuntary manslaughter.

Ever wonder why the LPD is never, and rightiously so, lenient on "senior" citizen drivers?

Elderly drivers should be monitored by relatives and friends to ensure that any erratic driving behaviors do not pose a threat to others. "

" tired are you a member of the CHP, you state that you have seen many older folks hurt and killed due to driving accidents. Now on to the teen age drivers, every year both Lodi high schools put on a program with crashed cars that young drivers play make believe to have been killed in. Tough to draw the line as to who has the worst driving records, older drivers going to slow or young drivers that can`t wait to go no where in a hurry. "

" I have been saying for years, there needs to be an age drivers should be checked every year. 67 may be too young and I don't know what the magical number should be, but there needs to be something done. I have seen too many injuries and deaths attributed to older drivers. "

" 4AStrongLodi: Perhaps you should give lessons on how to be perfect. To say you have never done anything wrong with a car is not to say it could never happen. I`m a bit older than 67 and feel my reflexes are as good or better than yours. If your younger, remember some day you will be older and just might make a mistake, and there goes being Mr. Perfect. Granted older drivers should be tested to make sure they can see and have reflexes capable of driving, especially at night. Older people might not be the best drivers, however check out the kids that drive today, either one could be the cause of an accident. Older folks drive with both hands on the wheel, while kids drive with no hands on the wheel or something else stupid. "

" Leonard: You day is coming and you will be 67 if your not alredy. That LPD motor officer made a left turn on Hwy. 12 right in front of the "senior" citizen, not totally the `ol boys fault. Accidents happen at all ages. A young girl that had her licences for only a few days pulled out of a shoping center in Sacramento without seeing the motor officer, don`t remember the outcome, but like I said accidents happen at all ages. "

" I think the DMV should check out this guys record and get him tested to see if he is capable of operating a motor vehicle.I remember when a LPD motorcycle officer was killed by an elderly driver. For the sake of someone else getting hurt-I hope the DMV really looks long and hard at his driving record. " I have never mistakenly hit the gas instead of the brake or put my automatic transmission in the wrong gear...nor cuased this degree of damage.

This is a frequent accident for seniors and it ends up with innocent people getting killed. There are numerous incidents (sometimes weekly) across the State, but most-notably is the Santa Monica Farmers Market.

Also, 67 is old enough that your facilities can start to deteriorate. "

Nope.

Never ever. "

Did you know that as a percentage of population, elderly drivers kill more people in accidents than teenagers? But, because the AARP is the most powerful lobbyist organization in the Country, it's always brushed under the rug. "
