Galt races to 18th-place finish at state cross country meet
Galt senior Lauren Petersen capped of an impressive high school cross country career with a 29th-place finish at Saturday's CIF Division I state meet in Fresno.
Petersen and her teammates concluded a history-making year by taking 18th place overall in the Division I team standings in their first trip to the state meet as a squad.
"I was very happy with how the girls did," said Galt head coach Nate Woods. "That 's really solid for the first time as a team."
Petersen, who placed 20th at state last year and was the Sac-Joaquin Section runner-up this year, clocked a time of 18 minutes, 35 seconds on the 5K course at Woodward Park.
Junior Sam Walling came in 95th overall with a time of 19:31, senior Alison Motor took 103rd with a 19:37, sophomore Kelsea Tiapon was 121st with a 19:53 mark and Hillary Ainsworth placed 174th with a 21:33. Also running for the Warriors were sophomore Sadie Stephenson, who finished 180th with a 22:11, and junior Ashley Hurst, who followed in 183rd place with a time of 22:31.
"I am very proud of them. Just looking at times this year and how they have improved has just been amazing," Woods said.
Dana Hills won overall Division I girls title with 65 points, while Galt took 18th in the 22-team field with 403 points.

In the Division V girls race, Elliot Christian's Megan Crutchfield turned in a 118th-place performance as the lone Eagle running in the meet. The junior ran the 5K course in 22:57.
In the Division I race, Woods said he was happy to see his two seniors — Petersen and Motor — turn in good times with a handful of college coaches on hand to watch. He's hoping they will get to continue their cross country careers in college.
As for the rest of his team, with three juniors and two sophomores coming back to the team next year with state experience, Woods is excited about the Warriors' future. He may have even more reason to think Galt could be making another trip back to state as Galt could move down to Division III next season with the opening of Liberty High School in Galt expected to drop Galt High's enrollment numbers.
Either way, if it is Division I or Division III, the Warriors will look to be back in the mix of the state's top runners next year. And Woods will be looking to Walling to help fill the gap left by Petersen.
"It looks like Samantha Walling is going to be the new big dog now," he said of the current junior. "She has been really consistent this year as our No. 2."
