Comcast to raise rates on bundled services

Comcast Corp., the local cable TV provider that touts more high definition channels and faster Internet speeds, is raising its rates.

The 4.5 percent increase will take effect Jan. 1, 2009, but will not affect all of Comcast's customers.

Those with bundled services, such as cable and Internet and digital phone connections, will be exempt from the increase, according to Comcast Media Contact Bryan Byrd. Those with just the cable TV service will see the increase at the start of the new year.

"While we are highly focused on controlling our costs for the benefit of our customers, price adjustments are a necessity in view of the increased cost of doing business in this challenging economic environment," Byrd said in a Comcast press release.

Byrd went on to say that though the company has been aggressive at controlling costs, Comcast expects continued increases in programming, "particularly in sports." Comcast says it still offers lower prices than its competitors.

" Am I the only one who couldn`t care less about "high def"? Why is regular TV all-of-a-sudden not good enough? Ultra-High speed internet is only good for those that deal in extreme amounts of data downloading. Why can`t the average Joe just get basic services at a decent rate? "

" Shouldn't this headline read "Comcast to raise rates, but NOT on bundled services"? "
