Noche Mexicana

Lodi event features wine, Mexican food

In honor of the anniversary of the Mexican Revolution, Alebrijes Mexican Bistro and Pasos Vineyards hosted Noche Mexicana, a wine and food event on Wednesday night.

Alebrijes chef and owner Ruben Larrazolo and Pasos Vineyards winemaker Antonio Pasos created a six-course meal that would reveal how an unlikely pairing — wine and Mexican cuisine — can actually complement one another.

Guests enjoyed the wine and food to the music of a three-member mariachi band.

The first course was Gazpacho Mexicano (cold tomato soup with jicama and serrano peppers). It was served in small martini glasses and paired with a crisp and clean 2007 Charbono Dry Rose.

Sope de tinga (masa shell with chicken in chipotle sauce and fresh cheese) came with a 2007 Voignier.

The third course, a jicama salad with mixed greens and a chorizo vinaigrette, was paired with an '05 Sangiovesse. Other courses included Ahi tuna ceviche with pomegranate pear guacamole and a 2007 Albarino, which Pasos says consists of a rare Spanish varietal that is limited in the Unites States; sirloin beef with mole poblano and cactus salad and an '05 Reserve Destarte; and rice pudding with a sweet, almost-honey-flavored Late Harvest Viognier.

Most of the dishes served are specialty items, but Larrazolo says many will be included in the new menu that will soon be released at Alebrijes.
