Stephanie Brown-Trafton's Olympic gold paying off with more honors
As the first U.S. woman to win an Olympic gold medal in the discus in 56 years, Stephanie Brown-Trafton's performance in the Beijing Games received more accolades on Tuesday as the Galt resident was selected for the Jesse Owens Award. USA Track and Field picked Brown-Trafton and Olympic decathlon champion Bryan Clay as the sport's top American athletes in 2008.

"All of us at USA Track and Field take great pride in saluting Bryan and Stephanie for their accomplishments during the 2008 season," said USATF CEO Doug Logan in a press release.
"Their focus and determination, and their unwillingness to settle for anything less than gold, epitomize the best qualities we can hope for in our athletes. We congratulate them on their performances and wish them continued success in 2009."
Brown-Trafton, who had never won a national championship in the discus before becoming the Olympic champion with a toss of 212 feet, 5 inches, will be presented with her award on Dec. 6 in Reno, Nev.
Former winners of the award, which was first given out in 1981, include Carl Lewis, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Gail Devers, Michael Johnson, Justin Gatlin and Tyson Gay.
