Warriors cross country girls headed to state
On Saturday, the Galt varsity girls cross country team made history by becoming the first squad in school history to qualify for the state meet as a team.
Funny thing was, the girls didn't know they'd accomplished the feat until long after they had run in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I race.
After the race, in which the Warriors finished second overall with 60 points, it took about an hour to post the results and the girls were busy routing for the Galt boys in their race. When they came back to find the results, they finally received the good news.
"It was really a history making moment for us," said Galt head coach Nate Woods. "I am very proud of them."
Lauren Petersen flashed her speedy ways in Folsom just like she has done all year, finishing second overall with a time of 19 minutes and 53 seconds. Sam Walling followed in fifth overall at 20:31, Alison Motor placed 11th (20:52), Kelsea Tiapon took 13th (20:58) and Ashley Hurst finished 29th (22:17). Davis High finished first and Folsom took third as both will join the Warriors at the state meet on Nov. 29 in Fresno.
"We are really pumped up," Woods said.
All of Saturday's runners had to fight through the unseasonably hot temperatures and some even passed out in the middle of their races. Woods said felt fortunate none of the Galt runners were effected.
The Warriors will have two weeks to prepare for state.
"Now we just need to refine our talent," he said. "Up to this point we have been training really hard and we still will train really hard, but we will kinda lighten the load. I think rest is really important."
The Galt varsity boys placed sixth overall with a 115. Josh Evans turned in the best performance for the Warriors, finishing ninth overall with a 17:36 — just 14 seconds shy of grabbing the final individual state qualifying spot.
Also running for Galt were Arturo Arriaga (12th, 17:41), Austin Blake (26th, 18:32), Matt Freitag (29th, 18:43) and Jason Coupe (39th, 19:24).
Lodi frosh-soph girls finish as section runner-up
With five solid runs by the Lodi frosh-soph squad at Saturday's Sac-Joaquin Section Division I cross country meet, the Flames finished as the section runner-up for the second straight year.
Lodi finished in second place behind Davis with 75 points and all of the Flames were awarded medals.
Alyssa Magana and Sydney Olagaray both clocked 14:43s, but Magana edged her teammate by a fraction of a second to take seventh while Olagaray settled for eighth. Madison Gritsch placed 13th (14:53), Katie Westerterp was 20th (15:26) and Katie O'Connor came in 27th place (16:16).
Lodi's Tommy Lomeli won the sophomore boys race with a time of 12:00 to merit a medal of his own. Lodi head coach Jeff Tillett said Lomeli's section win is the first for Lodi in recent memory.
The Lodi varsity girls took fifth overall in team standings with a 131, missing a team qualification to the state meet by two places. Flame Jordan Rodriguez led the Lodi pack with a 19th-place finish in 21:34. She was followed by Margo Haswell (24th, 21:58), Emily Highsmith (26th, 22:07), Shannon McElligott (28th, 22:15) and Hannah Wiesner (31st, 22:50).
As the lone Flame in the boys varsity race, Aaron Cardino raced through the course with a time of 17:35, but finished 13th — missing out on an invitation to state by 14 seconds.
Representing Tokay in the freshmen boys race, Tiger Patrick Johnson finished in 24th place with a 13:30, missing out on a chance to medal by 29 seconds.
Crutchfield advances for Elliot
Elliot Christian's Megan Crutchfield finished as the runner-up in Saturday's Sac-Joaquin Section Division 5 cross country meet, earning a trip to the state meet.
Crutchfield's time of 23:43 helped the Eagles finish second in the team standings, however since there was not a full slate of teams in the meet, Elliot will not be headed to state as a team.
Crutchfield was followed by Elizabeth Theisen (9th, 26:46), Candace Smith (10th, 26:48), Errica Musgrave (11th, 27:12) and Emily Buhkuhl (12th, 27:19).
The Eagle boys finished fourth in the team standings with help from a sixth-place run from Andrew Cotton (19:58). His teammate Alexander Lappas placed 13th (20:40), Garrett Fetzer took 13th (20:57), Tom Lippert finished 20th (21:52) and Luke Larue was 26th (22:57).
Elliot's Brittany Gross won the girls frosh-soph section title while Michael Benesch was runner-up in the boys freshmen race.
