Historical romance: Two teachers at Lodi High School tie the knot
Lodi Flame Staff Writer
On a cloudy day in October, after about two years of dating, history teachers Jackie Heinrich and Mike Wood said "I do" in front of their family and friends.
Despite the rain, Heinrich and Wood were married at Vinewood Community Church at 2 p.m. on Oct. 4. Their big wedding — about 240 guests attended — consisted mostly of fellow teachers, staff members and even a couple of students.
"I really wanted to go. I pretty much begged on the phone for 10 minutes," said junior Tommy Carli, who is in Heinrich's first-period U.S. History class.
Carli and fellow student junior Shantel Dickerson showed up to the wedding and even stayed for the reception that followed at Oak Ridge Winery. They both wish Heinrich and Wood "the best of luck and endeavors."
Carli said he had a good time at the humorous wedding. Wood's brown tuxedo and the unique get-away car emphasized Heinrich and Wood's fun-loving personalities.
Larry F. Smith acted as the newlyweds' chauffer and drove them away in his classic car. Retired P.E. teacher Bob Whittaker and Attendance Adviser Lori Bryant tied Ol' Roy dog food cans to the back of Smith's car, but the cans went flying off as they drove away, hitting any car or obstacle following behind them.
At the reception, the couple danced to "Magic" by Colbie Caillat. After a night of dancing and being together with friends and family, they were off to Cancun, Mexico for their honeymoon.
When they returned, Wood and Heinrich realized that living together was "going to be an adjustment," as Heinrich put it.
Heinrich admitted that she pushes Wood's buttons as well.
"I do things to torment his obsessive compulsiveness," said Heinrich with a laugh.
There are times when Heinrich will leave her soda cans out or leave a jacket sleeve sticking out of a closed closet door, things that tend to annoy Wood.
"Yeah, you better knock it off," Wood replied jokingly.
When asked about their beloved dogs, Scout and Zoey, and how they get along, Heinrich replied, "They get along better than we do. Even the cat gets along."
For most newlyweds, moving in together and buying a house is the first step in a marriage. But Wood and Heinrich already have their own separate homes.
"We're both remodeling, so we're going back and forth," Wood said.
Their houses are on the same street, so moving around is not a problem, Starting a new life together is going to be an adjustment, but for these two well-liked history teachers, students agree that seeing them married is a joyous occasion.
