St. Francis ends Flames' season

It's never easy going against the top seed.

That's what Lodi tennis players Alison Simon, Anna Adams and Jacque Lord had to do in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Individual Sections at Vintage High in Napa on Thursday.

While the Flames were unable to pull of upsets, they battled, giving the No. 1-seeded St. Francis singles and doubles teams a run for their money.

Adams and Lord, the San Joaquin Athletic Association doubles champions, put themselves in place for an upset when they won their first set 6-3. St. Francis came storming back however to win the net two 6-3, 6-4, moving onto the second round and ending the season for Lodi's sophomore duo.

"They did a great job," said Lodi head coach Dennis Sebastian.

Simon, a senior, fell 6-1, 6-0 to St. Francis' top singles player to close out her prep career.

"She still fought the girl point for point," Sebastian said of Simon, who went undefeated in the SJAA regular season.

While Simon's time as a Flame is over, Sebastian is hoping playing the section's best player will help her in her tennis future. He also hopes it will give Adams and Lord good experience to build on in the coming seasons.

"It's always good to play one of the best players," he said. "If you are pro, anyone would want to play (Roger) Federer."

The Lodi threesome were the only Flames in action on Thursday as the rest of the team was eliminated from the Sac-Joaquin Team Sections by Pleasant Grove on Wednesday. Sebastian, who concluded his first year coaching the Flames, was pleased with his team's accomplishments as Lodi won the SJAA title, made it to the second round of sections as a team and qualified three players to the individual sections.

"It was a good season. All around it was good," he said. "It was a very successful season."
