Tickets available for tri-tip chicken dinner
Grace Community Fellowship youth group in Woodbridge is selling tickets for its annual tri-tip/chicken drive-thru dinner, to be served from 4 to 6 p.m. on Nov. 16. Dinner will include a choice of tri-tip or a large chicken breast served with salad, beans and bread. Cost is $9, and all proceeds are used for youth activities at the church.
The church is located at the corner of Augusta and Orange streets, across from the Woodbridge post office. Advance purchase is required. For more information, call 369-1226 or the youth director at 333-2581.
Catholic bishop applauds Prop. 8 victory
Stockton Diocese Bishop Stephen Blaire applauded the apparent victory of Proposition 8 while lamenting the defeat of Proposition 4 in Tuesday's election.
"The 'yes' vote on Proposition 8 acknowledges that the marriage of a man and a woman embraces their sexual complementarity as designed by nature and includes their ability to procreate," Blaire said in a prepared statement.
"The 'yes' vote on Proposition 8 also recognizes that the ideal for the well-being of children is to be born into a traditional marriage and to be raised by both a mother and a father, even though in many circumstances the ideal is not possible," Blaire said.
The bishop added that Proposition 8's success is not meant in any to disparage those who disagree.
"Proposition 8 simply recognizes that there is a difference between traditional marriage and a same-sex partnership," Blaire said.
Proposition 4 was a common-sense initiative that affirmed parental involvement in the medical and moral decisions of their minor daughters, Blaire said.
"Polls had consistently shown that the citizens of California approve this responsible restriction, which would have placed abortion law in concert with other laws that grant parents oversight of and responsibility for their minor children," Blaire said.
"Although Proposition 4 did not pass, the campaign provided us all a valuable opportunity to educate both our parishioners and the general public," he said. "In addition, we will continue to explore opportunities in the public arena to ensure that the rights of parents are upheld."
