Galt Warriors, Lauren Petersen leave field behind at Sac-Joaquin Subsection cross country meet
Galt High's Lauren Petersen led a herd of local runners into the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I cross country championships with a first-place finish at the subsection meet on Saturday at Frogtown in Angels Camp.
The Lady Warriors also finished first as a team behind Petersen's winning time of 18 minutes, 55 seconds, more than half a minute better than Tokay's Holly Rankin, who placed second with a time of 19:27.
The top eight teams and 10 individuals not on a qualifying team advanced to the section meet, which will be held next Saturday at Folsom High School.
Rounding out Galt's first-place team at subsections were Sam Walling (6th, 19:57), Alison Motor (10th, 20:17), Kelsea Tiapon (14th, 20:33), Sadie Stephenson (40th, 21:41), Hillary Ainsworth (47th, 21:59) and Ashley Hurst (55th, 22:15).
Lodi earned a section berth with a fifth-place finish, paced by Jordan Rodriguez (12th, 20:24). She was followed by Margot Haswell (21:15), Emily Highsmith (39th, 21:37), Shannon McElligott (49th, 22:03), Betty Meza (63rd, 22:35), Brenley Noori (66th, 22:38) and Hannah Weisner (82nd, 22:33).
Tokay placed 11th as a team with Rankin the only individual qualifier. Also running for the Tigers were Haley Kroll (41st, 21:42), Kandy Soto (62nd, 22:32), Kelly Vanderheiden (112th, 25:11), Michele Young (129th, 25:44) and Yesenia Lamas (161st).
In the varsity boys race, Galt qualified as a team for sections with a sixth-place showing.
Placing for the Warriors were Arturo Arriaga (18th, 16:51), Josh Evans (31st, 17:10), Matt Freitag (43rd, 17:33), Austin Blake (48th, 17:38), Jason Coupe (66th, 18:03), Bradly Brown (125th, 19:26) and Eddy Button (127th, 19:29).
Lodi placed 14th, but Aaron Cardinio did earn an individual section berth by placing 16th with a time of 16:51. Also running for the Flames were Alex Diehl (35th, 17:21), Maskeen Muhammed (76th, 18:15), Chris Gillespie (121st, 19:16), Rory Panzarello (128th, 19:30), Sean Arnston (131st, 19:32) and David Devencenzi (157th, 20:02).
Tokay placed 20th behind Thomas Canchola (54th, 17:52), Manuel Lopez (92nd, 18:33), Cory Pack (106th, 18:59), Tony Hernandez (144th, 19:44), Joseph Galantine (149th, 19:50), Bobby Sidhu (200th, 21:40) and Josh Renteria (219th, 22:53).
Roberto Rosas of Grace Davis won the boys race with a time of 15:49 and Davis took the team title.
Elliot captured the Division V girls title, led by Megan Crutchfield (3rd, 22:09), Elizabeth Thiesen (10th, 24:16), Amy Lambdin (15th, 25:27), Candace Smith (18th, 26:07), Emily Buhrkuhl (24th) and Monica Rodriguez (25th).
Elliot's boys also advanced with a fourth-place showing, with Andrew Cotton (11th, 19:49), Alexander Lappas (12th, 19:50), Tom Lippert (13th, 19:57), Luke Larue (22nd, 21:18), Mason Vickers (33rd, 22:54) and RJ Martinez (36th, 23:27) leading the Eagles.
Lodi's Tommy Lomeli won the boys frosh-soph race with a time of 11:33 and Tokay's Patrick Johnson (18th, 12:57) also qualified for sections.
Lodi's frosh-soph girls qualified as a team, led by Sydney Olagaray, Madison Gritsch, Katie Westerterp, Katie O'Connor, Kelly Sheridan, Alexis Beck and Elizabeth Long.
