Alleged car thief crashes into Lodi apartment
A parolee who allegedly stole a car had a run of bad luck Thursday night, Lodi police said.
First, he happened to be push-starting the car when three plain-clothes detectives spotted him. Then he tried to get away but crashed headlong into an apartment. And then a dog in the car ran from the scene and was struck by a vehicle.
Timothy Nolan was ultimately arrested after the crash at Vine and Garfield streets, Detective Eric Bradley said. Nolan was jailed on suspicion of vehicle theft and violating his parole.
Bradley, Detective Nick Sareeram and Sgt. Doug Chinn happened to be driving through the area around 8 p.m. when they spotted two cars driving close together. They realized one was push-starting the other and figured it was a stolen car, Bradley said.
The pushing car turned so the detectives went after the stolen car, which picked up speed and then lost control. It crashed into an apartment in the 300 block of South Garfield.
The apartment's residents came home 10 minutes later to find a car in their home and water gushing out of broken water pipes.
Detectives detained Nolan and found three unharmed 3-week-old puppies inside the car. Other officers found the car's owner, who said the mother dog had also been in the car.
Police found the frightened chihuahua terrier mix running near Cherokee Lane, where it was hit by a car moments before the owner arrived to help catch it. The dog was expected to survive its injuries, Bradley said, but the owner is left trying to pay emergency veterinarian bills.
Nolan had already been wanted for questioning in a fight earlier in the day Thursday, in the same neighborhood where the car was stolen, Bradley said. The parolee had left moment before detectives arrived.
As for the other car, investigators were following leads Thursday night.
