Lodi's Kercia Brakel just misses qualifying for NorCal championships
Despite a strong effort from Lodi High senior Kercia Brakel, local golf teams were shut out at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Tournament on Tuesday at The Reserve at Spanos Park.
Only the top three teams and four individuals not on a qualifying team advanced to the Northern California championships, which will be held next Monday at Corral de Tierra Country Club in Salinas.
Brakel was the area's best hope and just missed earning her first trip to NorCals. Her 5-over 77 was ninth overall and put her in a five-way tie for the fourth and final individual qualifying spot. But there was little suspense to the playoff, as Sagee Palavizatana of Centers birdied the first hole to claim the final NorCal berth.
"You step into Masters and you're going up against some really strong teams," Lodi coach Tara Warner-Staal said.
"It was great to see Kercia have a chance to go on. There was a lot of pressure and a lot of people watching. I thought she handled herself well and did the best she could do. That's all you can ask for."
Perennial powerhouse St. Francis shot a 394 in winning its third straight section championship and 10th overall. Loretto (400) was second and East Union was third (436).
Lodi shot a 480 and placed eighth in the 13-team field. Tokay, which was playing in the Masters for the first time, was 11th (498). St. Mary's was sixth (473).
"It was a great season," Staal said. "I kind of called (the Flames) 'the little team that could.' They played their hearts out all season."
St. Francis teammates Jennifer Moore and Daniela Okino both shot 73 to share low medalist honors.
Samantha Stockton of Whitney (74) was the top individual qualifier, followed by Johansen's Christine Uhalde (75) and Dixon's Kayla Riede (76).
Lodi's scoring was rounded out by Marissa Hinchman (82), Danielle Aldrich (102), Sarah Boles (104) and Courtney Schmidt (115).
Scoring for Tokay were Alyssa Musto (85), Alex Ochoa (96), Maggie MacFarlane (98), Kasey Ota (104) and Katie Woznick (115).
Galt's Riley Sexton shot a 91.
