Parolee arrested in stolen vehicle
A Lodi man police had been looking for since a gang sweep last month was arrested Tuesday morning in a stolen car, according to Lodi police.
Aaron King, 27, was booked into the city jail on suspicion of vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools and violating conditions of his parole, Lt. Virgil Monroe said. King was arrested around 8 a.m. at Eden and Stockton streets by the Delta Valley Regional Auto Theft Task Force. They were in the area looking for stolen cars and spotted a 1994 Mazda Protege that had been stolen the previous day in the 700 block of North Church Street.
Officers arrested King and allegedly found a number of shaved keys in his possession, Monroe said. Such keys are generic enough that they will start different cars.
King was named in an Oct. 17 gang sweep in Lodi, when detectives and parole officers arrested eight people who were members of local or prison gangs. At the time, police released his photo and said he was wanted for moving without notifying his parole officer.
Tickets still available for LUSD employee fundraiser
Those interested in attending a fundraiser for the Lodi Unified employee who has been out of work due to a shoulder injury and aorta valve replacement can still buy tickets. As of Friday, 200 were already signed up for the event, which will be held Saturday at the Lodi Moose Lodge.
Employee Greg Vargem, who has worked as a school bus mechanic for the district for more than 16 years, underwent surgery to replace the valve in his heart last month, but is still facing shoulder surgery. Because of the pain, he has not worked since July. He is raising two daughters.
He had to undergo a second unanticipated heart surgery the day after his first one, thus adding to his out-of-pocket expenses.
Co-workers organized a spaghetti dinner and dance to help defer cost of living expenses, and the cost of the surgeries, since his insurance does not pay for them in full. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for children and seniors. There will also be door prizes, a silent auction and raffle.
Although tickets will be available at the door, organizers are hoping to secure a head count by the end of the week so they can prepare an accurate amount of food. To make reservations, contact Paula Tillery 331-7163 or 712-4987.
