By News-Sentinel Staff
Saturday, November 1, 2008 5:53 AM PDT

Two males robbed a Lodi recycling business at gunpoint Friday, taking cash before fleeing the scene.

Minutes after noon, the suspects entered Diaz Recycling, 548 S. Sacramento St., Lodi Police Sgt. Chris Jacobson said. They approached an employee, brandished a handgun and forced the employee into the business, which operates out of a storage shed at Tokay Street.

After forcing the employee to hand over an undisclosed amount of cash, the armed suspect fled south along the railroad tracks. Police found a black sweatshirt along the tracks but had not determined if it belonged to the suspects, Jacobson said.

The victim, who was not injured, said the suspects were young males wearing dark hooded sweatshirts. One was Hispanic and one was white, Jacobson said.

Free Election Day rides on GrapeLine bus service

Rides on Lodi's scheduled GrapeLine bus service Tuesday will be free of charge, and Dial-A-Ride will be open an hour later to accommodate Election Day voters.

Lodi's GrapeLine service operates from 6:15 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays. Dial-A-Ride will operate from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Election Day for those passengers who make reservations before 5 p.m. Monday by calling (209) 333-6806.

"It's our way of helping people exercise their Constitutional right to vote and, maybe, it will introduce some people to our service who will see how easy it is to use," said Transportation Manager Tiffani Fink in a statement released by the city of Lodi.

Lodi woman gets new attorney in murder case

A Lodi woman whose murder trial was postponed after she and her attorney requested that he leave the case got a new lawyer Friday.

Amera Addi, 20, will now be represented by attorney Doug Goss, who was appointed by the court to defend her against a murder charge related to the shooting death of a grandmother.

Addi's trial had been scheduled for Nov. 21 but it was canceled Thursday after a judge granted a request that attorney Gary Hickey be relieved. He declined to comment on the reason for his departure.

Now Addi will return to court Nov. 18, where attorneys will discuss a possible trial date.

Addi is charged in the Oct. 4, 2007, shooting of Georgina Perez, 49, who was visiting her young grandson on Swain Drive in Lodi. Addi did not fire the shot but is charged because she was the driver.

No new information in case of found fire captain

Lodi police released no new information Friday on the search for a fire captain who was found Thursday evening.

Jerome "Jay" Martinez, a Stockton fire captain, was the subject of a large manhunt Thursday after he left his Lodi home that morning and never showed up at a class he was scheduled to teach in Stockton.

After a daylong search, fishermen found him at Beardsley Lake near Pinecrest. Martinez apparently had some sort of medical condition that was not life-threatening, and he was taken to a Sonora-area medical center, according to Lodi police.

Because the case involved private medical issues, Lodi police said Friday that they were not immediately releasing any further details.

CalTrans to close lane Sunday on Highway 99

The California Department of Transportation will close the right lane on southbound Highway 99 at the East Lockeford Street overcrossing to allow work crews to repair a guardrail.

The work will occur on Sunday from 5 a.m. to noon. Motorists should expect 15 minute delays and are asked to take alternate routes when possible.

" Amem, dogs, people should have the right to carry personal protection firearms. Anyone who wants to use a handgun for illegal purposes has absolutely NO problem obtaining one. The old addage of "when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns" is absolutely true. Honest law abiding citizens are not going to use guns for illegal purposes. Perhaps faced with the posibility of getting shot themselves maybe these gun toting, robbing punks might think twice. "

" People get robbed or worse everyday by some scum bag with a gun. While they can`t defend themselves they just give up, hand over the money and if lucky won`t be hit with the robbers gun. These rotten b******s don`t care about anything and will use that illegal weapon if necessary. There is a good chance that an honest citizen could become a person on a slab or at best in Lodi Hosipital. I see no reason why the honest people of Lodi or anywhere that what to carry a weapon cannot. There are allot of hoops to jump through in order to carry a concealed weapon. I believe if a person wants to, he or she should have that right. "
