Life-threatening injuries after Highway 99 crash

A 22-year-old man is hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after a Lodi vehicle crash that authorities believe involved alcohol.

Teng Hiong, of Stockton, was driving south on Highway 99 around 4:25 a.m. Sunday when he passed Turner Road and approached the Lockeford Street overpass, said California Highway Patrol Officer Adrian Quintero.

Hiong lost control of his 2003 Acura, which rolled over into the center divide, destroying 20 to 30 feet of guardrail in the process.

The vehicle rolled back across the highway, coming to rest in the slow lane. No other vehicles struck it.

Both southbound lanes of the highway were shut down for half an hour until authorities opened the fast lane just after 5 a.m.

Hiong was wearing his seat belt and the airbags deployed, and firefighters had to cut Hiong from the car. He was taken to Lodi Memorial Hospital, where a medical helicopter transferred him to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento with major head trauma and internal injuries, Quintero said.

Investigators believe Hiong, the solo occupant of the vehicle, was driving under the influence of alcohol but are awaiting blood tests for a final determination, Quintero said.

Motorcyclist dies after rear-ending car

A motorcyclist died Saturday night after rear-ending a car that had slowed for a train on Eight Mile Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The 46-year-old Modesto man was traveling east around 5:55 p.m. when he passed West Lane and approached Pearson Road just before the railroad tracks. He passed a vehicle but then struck a 2002 Ford Taurus, which had also been heading east.

The 2001 Kawasaki burst into flames and the motorcyclist, whose name was not released Monday, was killed.

Authorities do not know if alcohol or drugs were involved and are awaiting toxicology tests, the CHP said. The man was wearing a helmet.

The Ford's driver, 74-year-old William H. Davenport, of Stockton, was not injured.

County women's center sees greater need

Administrators at the Women's Center of San Joaquin County say the number of clients has increased 30 percent over the past six months.

Counselors blame the economy for the sharp rise of people seeking help.

Residents in the county, which leads the nation in foreclosures, face high unemployment and extreme poverty. Compounding the problems is many nonprofit organizations designed to help also have been forced to cut back.

The Women's Center has lost 3.5 staff positions in recent months.

Officials at the Child Abuse Prevention Council said hours have been cut.
