Lodi Lake to be drained to build new boathouse

Just when Woodbridge Irrigation District officials thought they would not drain Lodi Lake for the winter following the construction of the new Woodbridge Dam, the city of Lodi asked the district to drain the lake one more time.

That's so the city and Meehleis Modular Buildings can install a new boathouse near the Discovery Center, west of the lake entrance during the winter.

The boathouse is being donated by Meehleis and the Lodi Centennial Group, and AM Stephens Construction Co. of Lodi will complete other improvements for $338,250.35. The improvements will be financed through the state 2000 park bond act and the 2002 resources bond act.

The irrigation district will drain on Nov. 3, and the lake should be bone dry by Nov. 6, said district Manager Andy Christensen. The lake will remain dry until the irrigation season begins next year, Christensen said.

From that time on, Lodi Lake should be filled year-round. The lake was previously drained annually when the old Woodbridge Dam was being used. The new dam was completed in 2006. It has the technology to not require the lake to be drained to avoid flooding.

Jim Rodems, Lodi's interim park and recreation director, said he hopes the city will provide more winter recreation programs at the lake once the lake is filled year round.

Lodi Lake needs to be drained so that Stephens can install a new foundation and install new docks in poured cement, said Dan White, who manages Lodi Lake programs.

Meanwhile, Meehleis is busy constructing the modular boathouse in three pieces. They will be trucked to the lake for installation, Rodems said.

The foundation and dock installation should be completed in six to eight weeks, White said.

The structure will be locked, and it will be filled with water to hold the three city-owned boats. It will be vandal-proof, White said.

Other work consists of removing and disposing of the existing metal boathouse structure, wood decking, rock retaining wall, galvanized pipe hand railing, decorative rock steps, concrete patio slabs, concrete walkways, fencing, gates and grinding and stockpiling of asphalt.

New work will include the installation block retaining walls, concrete flat work, concrete curbing, concrete pavers, wrought iron fencing, custom steel guard-railing and modifications to water, sewer and electricity.

" Sounds like poor job planning to me. If this boat dock was just dreamed up yesterday I can understand. How ever I have a feeling this was on the drawing borad for quite some time and should have been installed last year when the lake was drained. If indeed the job will be completed in 6-8 weeks, perhaps we can celebrate New Years Eve looking at a lake full of water. "

" Why cant they drain it and then fill it up when construction is completed instead of waiting intil spring? "
