Adult Day Care is a valuable program

Saturday, October 18, 2008 6:32 AM PDT

My 90-year-old mother has dementia/Alzheimer's. Being a daughter and caregiver of an aging parent can be stressful and emotionally draining.

No one is given training on the position of "caregiver." One day it just happens — your loved one becomes dependent on you and your family. This is when I discovered one of the most valuable programs serving our community: Lodi Memorial Hospital's Adult Day Care at Hutchins Street Square. My mother has been a client of LMH Adult Day Care Center for a year.

The staff at LMH Adult Day Care Center provides every client a protected, safe setting for a portion of the day. They provide care, love and understanding specific to each client, along with meals, exercise and recreational activities. By having this program available, my mother can continue to live at home, and it gives us, the caregivers, a needed break, allowing us to be better caregivers.

Also, LMH Adult Day Care Center provides a monthly support group. I meet with this group monthly. Participating in the group support can help me manage stress, exchange life experiences and improve skills as a caregiver.

I would like to say "thank you" to Terri Whitmire and the staff at Lodi Memorial Hospital Adult Day Care Center for all the support, encouragement and counseling you have provided me any time I have needed it in the last year. Also, a "thank you" to the countless volunteers who help at the center. You all are a blessing to the clients, your community and my family every day!
