Delta candidate claims his opponent doesn't live in district
With just weeks remaining in the San Joaquin Delta College Board of Trustees election, district 5 candidate Steve Castellanos is alleging that his opponent Al Lennox does not live in the district.
The two are the only candidates running for the District 5 seat, which encompasses northern San Joaquin County, Galt, Calaveras County and Rio Vista. Incumbent Dan Parises, who served on the board for 33 years, decided not to seek reelection.
Castellanos claims Lennox lives in Sutter Creek in Amador County, but listed a home in West Point in Calaveras County as his residence when he filed to run for the board of trustees.
Amador County is not included in the District 5 area. Delta College's policy states anyone running for the board must live in the district and be registered to vote there. It also states if an elected board member moves outside of the district they represent, the result will be an automatic resignation.
Lennox said he owns homes in both Amador and Calaveras counties and splits time living in each. He also said his daughters and a few grandchildren live in each residence with him. Lennox is registered to vote in Calaveras County and says it is legal to have two residences as long as he intends to return to the Calaveras County home at some point in the future. He said family issues forced him to purchase the Amador County residence, but he plans on retiring in Calaveras County.
"I have two residences. One in Amador County and one in Calaveras County," Lennox said. "I am representing Calaveras Country in this board race."
Castellanos said Lennox is violating the law. He said he filed a complaint with the California Secretary of State office and they told him they were opening an investigation.
On Monday, Secretary of State staff said they probably wouldn't handle that kind of investigation because it is not a state race; it would most likely be handled at the local level.
The Calaveras County District Attorney's office said they were unaware of any investigation on Monday. The Calaveras County Clerk's office did confirm Lennox was registered to vote in the county.
