A new educational program that promises to improve the performance of students struggling with school has opened in Lodi. The Harp Learning Institute held its grand opening on Thursday at its location at 1420 W. Kettleman Lane, Suite E.

Founder Lisa Harp started the institute in 2004 after a career as a teacher in California, Arizona and Colorado. According to the company's Web site, Harp created the program by using the same techniques that helped her own son become a better student.

Children in grades K-12 can attend the institute, which uses cognitive, visual, auditory and kinesthetic exercises and activities. Exercises in visual processing, for example, teach children how to focus from near to far to help them in the classroom.

The institute works to assist students who are performing below their grade level, reading at a lower level or having trouble with reading fluency, poor spelling and poor math skills.
