Mustangs suffer first setback
Delta College's football team tried to hold onto a slim 17-14 lead in the fourth quarter, but could not as host Butte College scored 10 unanswered points to win 24-17 on Saturday in Oroville, handing the Mustangs their first defeat of the season.
Delta (4-1) was up 17-14 after quarterback Pete Murdaca tossed a 13-yard touchdown pass to Diamond Morell to end a 41-yard drive with two seconds left in the second quarter.
The Roadrunners (5-0) evened the score at 17-17 in the fourth quarter when placekicker Auggie Heath connected on a 26-yard field goal with 9:09 to go. Butte took the lead for good when running back Alex Green scored on a 28-yard run with 2:36 left.
The Mustangs tried to rally but Murdaca was intercepted by Kiki Paul at midfield on third-and-23 to seal the victory for Butte.
Montrel Richardson, who scored on a 53-yard run, was Delta's leading rusher with 96 yards on 10 attempts. Edson Ortiz also scored on a 26-yard field goal.
