Late missed extra point helps Galt hold off Vista del Lago

Galt High's first league victory in more than two years didn't come easily.

And the Warriors have Vista del Lago, the new boys in the Sierra Valley League, to thank for the challenge.

A missed extra point after a penalty-extended drive late in the fourth quarter was the difference in the game as the Warriors were able to squeak by with a 14-13 victory over the Eagles on Friday at Warrior Stadium.

After inheriting the ball on their own 39 after a short Warrior punt, the Eagles pieced together a scoring drive kick-started by a 27-yard reception by Marquez White. Following a 5-yard run by Trey Hairabedian, Vista Del Lago began what would be the first of eight downs they would have inside the 10-yard line to tie the game.

With the ball on the 9-yard line Eagle quarterback Anthony Mull was able to get off a perfect throw into the end zone only to be dropped by Kaleb Smith as he straddled the outer pylon.

That's when things got interesting. On third down with 3:10 to play, Mull underthrew his receiver only to be granted another set of downs after a roughing-the-passer call. With the Warrior defense and their fans as fired up as they had been all evening, Galt was able to stuff a pair of rushing attempts by Hairabedian and force an incomplete pass on third down.

On fourth down, the Eagles were given what any Galt fan would be more than willing to describe as a gift as a late pass interference call from the official on the opposite side of the end zone negated a solid defensive stand by the Warriors. With the Galt coaching staff fuming on the sidelines, the Eagles were able to score on a 3-yard run from Hairabedian.

As the extra point sailed both short and right of the goal post, the Galt players ran jubilantly off the field, knowing they had survived quite a scare from a program that is only 2 years old and has no seniors on its roster.

Warriors 14, Eagles 13

Highlights: Galt WR Abram Piggee had two catches for 80 yards and two runs for 56 yards.
Records: Galt (2-2, 1-0 SVC); Vista del Lago (0-4, 0-1 SVC).
Next: Galt at Tokay, Friday, 7:15 p.m.

Galt's Trevor Alcoriza rushed for 60 yards on 22 carries with a touchdown and Robert Byrd threw for 149 yards on 6 of 12 passing and ran for a touchdown.

Hairabedian finished with 94 yards rushing on 25 attempts as the sophomore's effort epitomized the ground-and-pound effort used by both teams. Aside from his crucial connection late in the game, Mull, also a sophomore, struggled, completing just two other passes of the 11 he attempted for 46 yards.
