How is traditional marriage threatened?

I read the article in the Lodi News-Sentinel on Sept. 27 titled, "State religious leaders push for gay marriage ban."
Why is it that some ministers must find an enemy to rally their Christian troops against? Sociologists have called that kind of religious leadership "circle the wagon religion — with judgment at its core." From what the article says, it looks like this November big money conservative Christian organizations have joined the circle against gay and lesbian marriage. It is now the enemy that frightens Christendom.
It seems to me that all gays and lesbians want to do is legally live together. They are not asking for any more. How has this harmed Christian heterosexual marriage? I have been married for 46 years and don't feel threatened whatsoever.
Rather than rallying their congregations with fear, judgment and exclusion, why not remind their people again of the definition of love that Jesus taught. Let me paraphrase Jesus' words: "Whoever you are, wherever you are, you are accepted, affirmed and loved by me."
