Rankin leads Tokay girls XC by Merrill West

In its first Tri-City Athletic League meet of the season, the Tokay cross country team made a strong showing against Merrill West High School. The Tokay girls varsity swept the race 15-45 led by Holly Rankin in first place with a time of 18:47, followed by Kandy Soto (second), Stephanie Rodriguez (third), Kelly VanderHeiden (fourth) and Catalina Calderon (fifth). The boys varsity team was led by Manuel Lopez (18:04) in first place. Tokay's next fastest runners were Tony Hernandez (fifth), Marcus Wells (10th), Josh Renteria (11th) and Bobby Sidhu (12th). West won the boys race 22-39.

Oscar Gonzales won the boys frosh/soph race in 11:01 followed by Damanjit Hundal (third), Joe Alvarado (fourth), Patrick Johnson (fifth) and Kevin Arcalas (seventh). West forfeited the race with only four runners.

The girls frosh/soph runners were led by Haley Kroll again taking first with a time of 13:38. She was followed by Daisy Baltazar (16:16), Deyannira Moreno (16:33), Taylor King (17:51) and Catherine Ju.

Tokay 3 wins, 2 losses


The Tigers went 3-2 over the weekend at the Woodcreek Tournament in Roseville for a seventh-place finish overall. Lots of Tigers chipped in goals including Katy Walton (seven), Haley Ring (five), Marissa Schuh (four), Amy Daneke (three), Ashlyn Daniels (three), Taylor Gums (three), Cara Burcull (two), Ava Dornbush (two) and Amy Jacoy (one). Tokay goalie Amanda Jorgenson was solid in goal, helping the Tigers record two shutouts.

Lodi wins Freedom Round Robin


This weekend the Flames won the fifth annual Freedom Round Robin Tournament, one of the biggest girls team tennis tournaments in the East Bay. They beat Milpitas, Liberty, Antioch, Heritage and Freedom High, who is No. 1 in the Bay Valley Athletic League. Last year Lodi High entered the tournament with two wins in the first day until the tournament was canceled due to rain. This year the Lodi High girls tennis solidified the win with only dropping seven games out of 35.

The Warriors fell to Oak Ridge 25-19, 25-13 and 25-9 before rebounding to beat Cordova 25-12, 25-20 and 25-17 for their first Sierra Valley Conference win this weekend. Against Cordova Nicole Newman had three kills, three blocks, one ace and seven digs, Jaclyn Pinasco had three kills, one block, six digs, Megan Warmerdam had two kills, three assists and seven digs, Amelia Raquel had one kill, seven assists and five digs and Alexis Cuevas added two kills in the match that Galt head coach Kelly Stanfill said was the best she's seen the Warriors play in three years.

In good team effort against Cordova, Newman had five kills, three blocks, four digs and two aces on jump serves, Andrea Hanchey had two kills and three digs, Cuevas had four kills and one dig, Pinasco had five kills and six digs, Erika VonBroeck had four kills and five digs, Kayla Smith had five kills, three digs and one ace, Raquel had four kills, 15 assists and five digs, Mary Lane had one kill, two aces and 11 assists and Alicia Villano had four assists and a dig.
