News-Sentinel endorsement

In San Joaquin County judicial race, James Morris is our choice

Updated: Friday, September 26, 2008 11:17 PM PDT

We are impressed by James Morris and recommend him to voters as the bestqualified candidate for the opening on the Stockton Superior Court.

On Nov. 4, he will face Phil Urie, who received slightly more votes in the June primary election. We suspect that Urie's claim to the job description of "prosecutor" impressed many voters. Those we've talked with in the legal community respect Urie and describe him as a solid, reliable member of the District Attorney's team.

We believe, though, that Morris is beyond solid — he is exceptional.

A study of endorsements of the two candidates will reveal that Morris is more respected by judges, other lawyers and police officers. In fact, Morris has been endorsed by Dave Drivon, the third vote-getter in June.

An attorney for 37 years, Morris has represented a wide variety of clients in civil cases. He has also acted as a "discovery referee," a quasi-judicial job appointed by Superior Court judges in complex cases.

In addition to a healthy list of endorsements and far-ranging professional experience, we are impressed by Morris' record of public service. He was a founding director of the Stockton Children's Museum and has worked hard for such diverse causes as the county's Legal Aid Society, the Stockton Symphony and Stockton Children's Home.

Morris appears ready to step up and make impartial decisions. We trust him and recommend him.
