Galt elementary district adopts pledge
Schools within the Galt Joint Union Elementary School District will post the city's "Community of Character" pledge in all schools and at the district office after it was adopted by the board of trustees Wednesday night. The same pledge was approved by the high school district earlier this month.
"We are pleased to join the city of Galt and high school district in supporting a true learning community of character and care for Galt's children," Superintendent Karen Schauer said in an e-mail Thursday.
The board also discussed moving forward in working with the city and high school district to study the development of a Youth Master Plan to better coordinate youth services among agencies, according to Schauer. It is also hoped that the coordination will expand youth opportunities.
Also, the board approved opening a bank account to receive donations for the new therapeutic riding program that will serve special needs children in the Galt area. Citizens, organizations or businesses interested in donating funds can write checks payable to the Galt Horse-Assisted Learning Program, attention GJUESD Superintendent Karen Schauer, 1018 C St., Suite 210, Galt, 95632.
VA announces grants for homeless programs
Homeless veterans in Stockton will get more assistance, thanks to a Department of Veterans Affairs grant providing more than $377,000 to the Dignity's Alcove shelter for renovations, a new van and 20 new beds.
VA has identified public and community nonprofit groups eligible to receive payments for housing and supportive services to homeless veterans, including 49 grants for vans that will transport homeless veterans to health care and training programs, according to a statement released by the department on Wednesday.
The grants are part of VA's continuing efforts to reduce homelessness among veterans.
VA's grant and per diem program helped reduce the number of veterans who are homeless on a typical night last year by 21 percent to about 154,000 veterans. VA also provides health care to about 100,000 homeless veterans, compensation and assistance in obtaining foreclosed homes and excess federal property, including clothes, footwear, blankets and other items.
The agency also announced a $250,000 grant to improve a homeless shelter in Modesto as well as add 20 beds.

Forums in U.S. Congress 11th district race
The Jerry McNerney for Congress campaign announced its participation in two candidate forums this fall, according to a statement released Thursday by the campaign office.
McNerney, D-Pleasanton, is running for re-election after his first term as a U.S. Congressman. His opponent is Stockton businessman and Republican Dean Andal.
The first forum is the League of Women Voters Candidates' Roundtable Discussion. The roundtable discussion will take place in early October and air multiple times prior to the election on Contra Costa Television. It will also be available on the Contra Costa Times Web site.
