Neighborhoods also affected by foreclosure

Updated: Tuesday, September 23, 2008 6:16 AM PDT

I am a current high school student with three older brothers, one of whom is going through a devastating foreclosure. His family is now forced to start a new life.

Congressman Jerry McNerney understands that foreclosures are a huge problem and that this crisis is ruining our economy.

What many don't realize is that foreclosure not only affects the family going through it, but also the entire neighborhood because these areas become locations for criminal activity and reduce property values for everyone.

My brother's family is fortunate and will not be left homeless. Yet, there are many families who do not have a safety net like my brother. That is why McNerney has been working to address the problem. He has held workshops to help families facing foreclosures meet with counselors and just brought out the Financial Services Committee chairman to see first-hand the devastation foreclosures are wreaking in our area.

My brother is lucky that he has a back up plan, and we are lucky to have McNerney.

" Yesterday, I opened a large political campaign mailer from the National Association of Realtors. It was supporting McNerney. Thats all I need to know. Sometimes you can understand the issues by knowing which puppeteer is pulling the strings. NAR is pulling on those strings. BUY BUY buy that little house on the prairie built in 1922 for only $625,000. "

" Sam, that's a huge BINGO! I have friends who did the same thing, and I really don't feel sorry for them. Being a big shot was more important than being responsible and realizing their limitations. "

" My comments are NOT addressed to this letter writer.

I am sorry to hear about anyone losing their home, but seriously, what makes a person earning $50,000 a year believe he can afford a $500,000 home? This is shear stupidity. The majority of the housing foreclosure problems came from people not using their brains, acting out of greed, and buying more than they could afford.

Buying a home is not a difficult task. Figure out what you can afford to pay, and do not spend any more than that. "

" Wrong. McNerney is an idiot. He only parrots the Pelosi line. Where are his concrete accomplishments? What has he really done to help your brother? Isn't your brother still out of his home? How has McNerney helped him?

Unbelievable! The man gets your praise for studying the problem. We need decisive leaders, and McNerney is not it. "
