Seminar teaches techniques to fight diabetes through lifestyle
Take control and declare war on diabetes at Lodi's first-ever "Reversing Diabetes and Obesity" seminar Sunday through Tuesday.
Dr. George Chen, one of six Lodi eye doctors sponsoring the event, said he has seen more diabetics in his office, and some days with every second patient coming in has diabetes.
"Uncontrolled diabetes is a leading cause of blindness, end-stage renal disease and limb amputations," he said in a press release. "Eye problems including cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy are more common in diabetics."
The seminar will aid patients in techniques to reverse the effects of adult-onset, type II diabetes through physician-led lectures. The topics will include the causes of diabetes, controlling blood glucose safely, nutrition in diabetes and obesity, weight loss without pain or pill, diabetes and stress management and preventing diabetic complications. Cooking demonstrations will also be held.
In 1999, Dr. Neal Barnard released a study proving that type II diabetes could be reversed with diet and lifestyle. In 2006, he published a second study showing that this dietary approach is three times more effective in controlling type II diabetes than the current American Diabetic Association's recommendations.
The "Reversing Diabetes and Obesity" seminar is a condensed three-day seminar that addresses the pertinent portions of the 18-day NEWSTART Lifestyle Center. It has been presented for over a decade all over the U.S. by the Weimar Center of Health and Education.
The seminar will be held at English Oaks SDA Church, 1260 W. Century Blvd. Cost is $225. For more information about the program, visit www.reversingdiabetes.com. To register, call (800) 525-9192.
