Flames expect a battle against Warriors

By Joelle Milholm
News-Sentinel Staff Writer
Updated: Friday, September 19, 2008 6:39 AM PDT

The Lodi Flames will not only be looking for their second win in as many weeks when they host the Galt football team at 7:30 p.m. today at the Grape Bowl, they will also be looking to be the victors of the annual border battle between the neighboring towns.

Lodi's offense got off to a good start last week, totaling 339 yards in a 19-14 win over Sheldon. A big chunk of that, 159 yards to be exact, came on 29 carries by sophomore starting running back Jordan Perkins. After the game, Perkins credited the offensive line for his production, which was nearly matched by quarterback Patrick Armstrong's 141-yard, one-TD passing performance.

Despite the healthy numbers, along with the fact that McNair beat Galt for its first win in the three-year history of its program, Flames head coach Todd Dillon knows the Warriors won't be pushovers.

"We have to neutralize their defensive line," Dillon said. "They are big and strong."

Galt's defense gave up 29 points to McNair last week, but Warriors head coach Warren Schroeder is also excited to see how his defense will stack up against the Flames. After working out the Week 1 kinks, Schroeder is confident his D will do better than last week.

"I am really excited to see our defense play," he said. "They have worked really hard this week and I know Lodi has a good offensive line, but I am excited to see how they match up. It is a good test for us in the preseason to get ready for league."

Lodi starting fullback and linebacker Conner Peterson, who left the Sheldon game in the third quarter with a left knee injury, will be out this week. Dillon says doctors are speculating Peterson suffered a torn medial collateral ligament, but won't know until an MRI can be taken.

Perkins is expected to take the majority of the carries for Lodi. Alex Santiago will be starting in Peterson's place at fullback and Dillon said he will take some carries.

Last week, the Warriors were missing their starting center and two guards because of injuries. Galt's offense hurt in their absence, failing to get into the end zone as its only score came on a 82-yard kick return by Abram Piggee.

Even though the linemen won't be returning for the Lodi matchup, Schroeder is more optimistic about this week's game, having had a week to practice with second-string players who will be filling in.

"We've tried to solve some issues from Friday," he said. "Some first-game issues, just simple mistakes that cost us big offensive plays that could have made a big difference in the game."

Feeling more confident about his line, Schroeder believes his offense will have more opportunities to run its plays and gain yards. Last week Galt totaled only 135 yards. Schroeder said he is hoping to see quarterback Bobby Byrd throw the ball more as well as see his capable running backs move the ball.

Week 2 Kickoffs

Galt at Lodi
When/where: Friday, 7:30 p.m. at the Grape Bowl.
Records: Lodi 1-0, Galt 0-1.
Last week: Lodi defeated Sheldon 19-14, Galt lost to McNair 29-7.
Last meeting: Lodi beat Galt 27-17 last season in Galt.
Key matchups: Flames running back Jordan Perkins and Lodi's offensive line vs. Galt's defensive line. The Lodi sophomore rushed for 159 yards last week and will now face a defense that gave up 143 yards to McNair RB Joe Potter last week, but Galt's big and strong line should be improved after week one.
Galt's offense vs. Lodi's defense. The Warriors recorded only 135 yards of total offense against McNair last week with one touchdown. Galt will look to move the ball better, including opening up its passing game, while Lodi will try to not let it.
Notes: Lodi will look to balance its running game with QB Patrick Armstrong, who completed 8-of-15 passes last week for 141 yards and one TD. Galt is still looking for its first offensive score of the season as the only touchdown the Warriors scored last week was on an 82-yard kickoff return by Abram Piggee.

Tokay at Manteca
When/where: Friday, 7 p.m. at Manteca.
Records: Tokay 1-0, Manteca 1-0.
Last week: Tokay defeated Hiram Johnson 34-6, Manteca beat Beyer 27-20.
Last meeting: Tokay lost 49-17 to Manteca last season at the Grape Bowl.
Key matchups: Manteca QB Matt Barber vs. the Tokay secondary. Barber completed 8-of-13 passes last week for 199 yards, two TDs and one interception. The Tigers' secondary had two interceptions vs. Johnson and only allowed one TD. Tokay's running game vs. Manteca's defense. Last week, the Tigers rushed for four TDs and will look to do the same against the Buffaloes.
Notes: In week one, both Tokay and Manteca scored the majority of their points in the second half. Both will be trying to get on the board earlier in this contest.
Directions: Go south on Highway 99 and then take the Yosemite Avenue/E. Highway 120 exit and go west into Manteca. The school is located at 450 E. Yosemite Ave. on the south side of the road.

Turlock Christian at Elliot
When/where: Friday, 7 p.m. at Elliot Christian.
Records: Elliot 1-0, Turlock Christian 1-0.
Last week: Elliot defeated Delta 20-19, Turlock Christian beat North Hills Christian 26-14.
Last meeting: Turlock Christian shut out Elliot 28-0 last year in Lodi.
Key matchups: Eagle QB Mason Vickers vs. the Turlock defense. Vickers pioneered a late-game comeback win last week, capping off a 7-for-15, two TD performance and will look to make big plays again. The Elliot defense vs. Turlock Christian QB Robbie Smallwood, who went 12-for-14 for 145 yards and two TDs last week.
Notes: Elliot will need to watch out for Cody Alldrin, Smallwood's favorite target last week, who reeled in eight receptions for 119 yards and two TDs. Elliot will not only be without head coach Dean Davis, who will be at the Azusa Pacific-Wisconsin-La Crosse football game watching his sons play, but also running back/linebacker Russell Hausauer, who is out after injuring his ankle vs. Delta.
