God can cause disasters if he chooses
I've been intrigued by the recent writings about the wildfires and God's character.
While we can't know everything about God (He is an infinite being, and we finite creatures can't comprehend the totality of this), He has given us, in the Bible, all we need to know about Himself. And it is crucial that we endeavor to develop a biblically balanced view of God.
Some focus only on God's love. In John's first epistle, he states twice that God is love. And He is. His love has no limit, has no conditions, and is absolutely perfect. His love for us can be seen at the cross, where He sent His Son, Jesus, to die the death we deserve and to give us eternal life. Incredible!
However, if we focus only on God's love, He can become, in our minds, a cosmic sugar daddy, a doting old grandfather who looks the other way when we sin. Such a God can be loved, but not reverenced.
Others focus only on God's judgment. The Bible is quite clear that God does, and will, judge sin. God is holy, righteous and just, and because He is so, He must punish sin. To do otherwise would be inconsistent with these attributes.
However, if we focus only on God's judgment, He can become, in our minds, a vicious tyrant who takes great joy in knocking us down. Such a God can be reverenced, but not loved.
However, balancing God's love and justice gives us a solidly grounded understanding of Him. Can God, out of love for a nation and a desire for it to return to Him, use natural disasters, financial hardships and terrorist attacks as a form of chastisement to get its attention?
Yes, He can if He so chooses. To say, "He always does this," or "He would never do this," is to have a skewed understanding of God.
Our God is a God of love and a God of justice. It's important for us to be cognizant of both in order to have a Biblically balanced view of Him.
