Despite a grand jury report that the Stockton Unified School District may have misused funds under her watch, Lodi Unified has hired Lisa Kotowski as its head curriculum director.

"We knew what her position was (at Stockton Unified)," said new LUSD Superintendent Cathy Nichols-Washer. "We didn't have any concerns regarding her integrity or character. There were no questions on that."

Kotowski, who could not be reached for comment Thursday, will be paid between $107,076 and $135,071. The actual salary will depend upon the verification of years of experience, according to Mike McKilligan, assistant superintendent of personnel.

Kotowski was SUSD's director of state and federal programs, but resigned in August after 20 years with the district.

In a report by the San Joaquin County Grand Jury in June, it alleged that SUSD's management inappropriately used restricted state and federal funds.

" How ironic that tonight recordnet.com is reporting possible teacher layoffs in LUSD "

" A different view: Management role playing: This is an exercise that can test REAL leadership: Scenario: The superintendent should imagine that there is NO MORE MONEY IN THE BUDGET, except $135,000. You can spend it on MORE educational materials, part time reading coaches from the community, school buses for Elkhorn or ONE HIGH SALARIED Curriculum Director. Do you pick selection number 1, 2, 3 or 4, or perhaps a number 5 not defined? I already see the answer; Its here in the LNS. We need to hire one more "mo money mo money educrat. We would be fascinated by what this person will REALLY do in this job for 2080 hours of work per year. Can this position be justified, when kids have to walk to school, share textbooks, or we pink slip ten teachers. Some say that the Asst Supe job is another political plum for an old chum from Elk Grove Unified. This job was invented by Huyett but the job stays hanging on the plum tree, sucking up more precious financial resources. Eduocracy in action. "

" These are interesting posts from February and April for a news story dated September 10, 2008. Its the same old "I'll scratch your back and you scratch mine". The Governor from Alaska has a salary less than this. Its time we stop the management merry-go-round. Its nothing but waste and abuse of the system. I wonder how long it will be before we hear the refrain but, "It's for the kids!"?

Lets look at the details of this position. "curriculum director". The last I heard it was the state of California through the CDE that defined the framework and content standards. All teachers must adhere to these standards. State contracts with the state standardized test firms also use these standards. Any adult can go to the CDE to look or download the content standards that are used to write the textbooks that our kids use. What is the BIG secret? Worry about teaching to the the state mandated content standards first, standardized tests second and bureuacrats LAST. What is so imperative about hiring ONE MORE pencil pusher to "look important"? "

" The salary is actually quite low. Im sure with her credentials and experience she could make well over 200k in the private sector. Teachers in Pleasanton are making nearly 100k now. Top of the pay scale in San Ramon is 90k. Wake up people, to somebody with advanced degrees, 125k a year does not get you much. This is not Russia, smart people make more money, its a fact. Here is a tip, do your homework, go to college, dont play video games, and you may find a decent job that pays over 100k, its not that hard to do. "

" GREAT, just what we need is more BRASS at the District office!
What about the 10 teachers we HAD to lay off because of budget cuts??
This 135K would really have come in handy! If she worked 20years for SUSD I guaratee she is at the top of that pay scale and she dosent sound like she is very good with money ( ours) so we have more dishonest peole in power at LUSD How wonderful!!
Lets lay off everyone leave the D.O. alone and lets see what gets done then..... YEP NOTHING!!!! "

" Doesn't anyone at the ESC know how to plan and budget? All those overpaid Educrats with fancy job titles trying to look busy. Our school board assigned a Personnel manager with an additional ONE MILLION dollar increase in his pension, for 90 days of "work" as a trainee Superintendent. Why? The only excuse was that he was "a nice guy" and he whined it "wasn't fair" that he "had" to do two "jobs" for 90 days. Thats more than $10,000/day for 90 days. If its "all about the kids", why not provide this money for their education? HOW SELFISH! "

" I wonder if these numbers are accurate perhaps someone is now second-guessing the money that was sunk into that new gym at Lodi High School.

Hey, how about that lottery!! Didnt that solve all these education/financial problems?

I really believe it's about time that we finally get some straight answers from obviously crooked politicians and/or school administrators.

While we listen to the presidential wannabes attempt to pull the wool over our eyes (again) about how he/she/they will institute real change in Washington, weve got our own home-grown problems that need our immediate attention. I am really getting tired of this crap. "

" It is amazing that Galt can build over a $1 million dollar doggie park and Stockton can rebuild their blighted areas but Lodi has problems with everything. Education should not be tampered with it is too precious. Lodi when are you going to wake-up? "

" Impossible! No one holds the magic pill to cure the socio-economic issues that are the main contributors to low test scores. If these people have had the answer, why have they waited until now to enlighten us? It's because they don't have any real solutions, only a pot of money to waste on unproven experiments in education. "
