The Tokay Tigers cross country team survived the blistering heat and agonizing hills of the Lagoon Valley Cross Country Invitational on Saturday and two runners even earned medals.

Freshman Haley Kroll finished 11th in the two-mile frosh/soph race with a time of 15:18 and junior Michelle Young finished 17th in the two-mile JV race with a time of 17:52. Junior Kelly Vanderheiden showed particular heroism when her shoes fell off and she was forced to finish the race sock-footed over scorching pebble-ridden dirt paths.

Many athletes suffered dehydration including Tokay's top varsity runner, Holly Rankin, who was forced to step out of the race in 14th place with only 300 yards to go.
