AAUW installs officers for 2008-09

On May 13 the Lodi Branch of American Association of University Women (AAUW) installed new officers for 2008-09. The installation and awards dinner was held at the Lockeford Springs Golf Course. In keeping with the new board's theme for the coming year, “Stepping into the Future,” the tables were beautifully decorated with flower arrangements featuring gold shoes of every description.

Co- presidents Joanne Hildenbrand and Julie Thompson welcomed and thanked members for their contributions that made it possible to fulfill the 2007-08 goals set by the association.

Alisa Alves, from congressman McNerney’s office, presented awards to Joanne Donovan of the, “Be Informed Interest Group” of Lodi Branch of AAUW for its water studies.

Joanne Hildenbrand accepted a special award presented by Alves for Lodi AAUW’s efforts on behalf of advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy and education.

Ren Pham-Peck thanked AAUW for its support of AVID in all of the high schools this year.

Janice Cobb presented The Education Foundation Award for 2008 to member Sally Irizary for her tireless work in promoting our branch fundraiser for the education foundation.

Julie Thompson led the Installation of the 2008-09 Board: Elise Forbes and Janet Bange, co-presidents; Linda Sattler and Julie Thompson, program vice presidents;Pat Fehling and Glory Hudson, program vice presidents elect; Ro Lewis and Lorraine Ramsey, membership vice presidents; Carolyn Hannesson and Joanne Hildenbrand, membership vice presidents elect; Joanne Cobb, recording secretary (board); Suga Moriwaki, recording secretary (general meetings); Nanette Green, treasurer; Mary Lou Koth, membership treasurer.

Following the award ceremony and the installation, the new co-president Elise Forbes conducted the first meeting.

Members were reminded that the founding of AAUW was 126 years ago. The Lodi branch was charted in 1959, 50 years ago next spring.

The goals for 2008-09 are:

Continue to grow in membership and involve all members.

Encourage advocacy and education for women and girls.

Increase involvement in the community.

Become more aware of environmental issues.

Meet new friends and have fun.

The first event for the coming year will be an August Kickoff Brunch. It will be held on Aug. 16, at 10 a.m. at Sattlers’ Rose Garden at 6717 E. Harney Lane. Members are encouraged to wear their favorite shoes to the brunch to help celebrate the start of 50 years as they “Step into the future!”
