AAWU reached its goals for 2007-08

Updated: Wednesday, May 28, 2008 3:47 PM PDT

When Joanne Hildebrand and Julie Thompson accepted the office of co-president for the AAUW organization in June of 2007, they set three goals for the organization. The organization has been successful in reaching each of the goals.

One goal was to increase the scholarship support and through the efforts of fundraising events there was enough money raised to fund four $500 scholarships. Also the organization was able to send two girls to Tech Trek, a math and science camp for girls, along with their mentors.

“Go green.” At each meeting members shared different ways to help our environment by recycling and limiting the use of chemicals in household use. Many other ideas were also suggested in order to “go green.”

Increase the membership. The membership has increased from 82 to 100 members.

Throughout the year, the members enjoyed many interesting programs presented at the monthly meetings. Some of the presentations were as follows:

Corey Daniel spoke about his experience in the World Trade Center on 9/11/01.

Susan Hitchcock spoke concerning Lodi growth issues.

Gloria Heidi presented Hollywood’s Magic Mirror.

Donna Goldberg spoke about the Polygamous family.

In February, there was a panel discussion on “What is it like to run for public office.”

Dorothy Mulvihill, while dressed in costume, presented stories of the lives of famous women at the March meeting.

In April, Pascal & Thierry Claude of Bon Appetite spoke about the immigrant experiences.

Other special interest groups that members could choose from were Bunco, craft group, book group, Supper Club, “Be Informed” group. And Movie Buffs.

The American Association of University Women advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education and research.

Membership is open to all persons who hold associate or baccalaureate degrees from accredited colleges or universities.

In principal and in practice, AAUW values and seeks a diverse membership. There shall be no barriers to full participation in this organization on the basis of gender, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, disability or class. Membership is not by invitation. For more information visit www. aawu-ca.org or call Lorraine Ramsey at 333-1269.
