Rotary golf team loses winning streak
Bob Bader
No matter how hard I tried, I could not get the members of my foursome to play decent golf and for the first time in years, we were not in the top of the list of winners out at Lockeford Springs. I think the big reason was the fact we traded our usual ringer (Ron Beckman’s son, Adam) for Tom Stokes, the terror of the Thornton farm team but a pussy-cat at Lockeford.
The team practically had to carry Dale Edwards, who like his friend and team-mate, Bob Bader, couldn’t hit the ground with his hat. Interestingly enough, three of the members of the team had new super big drivers. Honest to goodness, those clubs are bigger than the big black frying pan my dad used to cook a whole round steak lying flat on the bottom. You would think a person would have to be blind drunk or just plain blind to not make contact with the golf ball, but on two occasions, the only thing to touch the ball was the wind storm, a swing and a miss generated. In one instance a certain dirt farmer from Thornton took a mighty swing at the ball, ticked it with a touch so deft, it fell to the grass within the shadow of the tee itself. There aren’t a half-dozen golfers in the history of the game that could do that on purpose.
Just to show our respect to the rest of the players, we went from the 18th green straight to the parking lot so as to not take any of the approbation from the winning teams.
I think the Zinfest went well. We will be getting a report from Chris Littlefield, the best chairman of the event in the history of the club. Congrats to those of you who helped and a special thanks to Chris and the kids from Jim Elliott Christian High School.
