Rotary holds golf tournament

Updated: Wednesday, May 14, 2008 4:18 PM PDT

The sometimes and more often than not Lodi Rotary Club golf tournament and fishing lesson will be held today at the Lockeford Springs Golf Club. It should be fun. The following prizes will be awarded; thanks go to Paul Mertz who will be buying the prizes for the good of the order. The most remarkable prize will be a new Prius automobile for the lucky golfer who shoots a hole in one on number 6.

Other prizes will be as follows: Closest to the hole on the three pars: A new Callaway driver. The team with the lowest score: A new set of clubs each. The team with the lowest net: New putters and two dozen Titlist PR1 golf balls. Most improved player from last year: A year of free golf out at Alex Spanos’ place. Longest drive on each of the five par holes: A week at Saw Grass, all expenses paid.

On the fishing side: Most accurate cast: A custom fly rod and a hundred hand-tied dry fly lures. Largest fish: A week’s vacation at Punta Chivago in Baja on a fishing yacht with all the amenities. Larry Mettler, your host.

Last week, Phil Katzakian was the guest speaker who brought along his resident expert, Blair King, to update one and all on the happenings at Silly Hall. (Paul Zimmerman usta call it that, remember?)

All in all, the city is doing OK and that’s more than you can say for the cities on and by the Bay. San Francisco and Oakland are averaging a murder a day, Richmond has parts of town that people without gang affiliations are better off to avoid assiduously.

Further west, we are seeing so incredible tragedy. The cyclone killed about a million people. Al Gore said it was because of global warming.

Next week and the week after: Jackson Hall The Uptown-Lowdown Jazz Band will be here the 22nd. That meeting will be at 6:00 PM and the per person fee will be $25.

Those of you who have attended the concerts put on by the guys from the state of Washington know it is a major highlight of the year. It happens those guys are all major musicians, some of whom teach music on a college level.
