Tayler Hockett escapes Alcatraz
Accomplishment: Tayler Hockett, a Sonoma State graduate student who graduated from Lodi High in 2002, placed first in the 20-24 age group at the 28th Annual Escape From the Rock Triathlon last Sunday in San Francisco.
Hockett completed a 1.5-mile swim, 2.5-mile run, 13-mile bike ride and a closing 10K run in a time of 2 hours, 44 minutes, 53 seconds. He finished 73rd overall out of more than 800 participants.
"I had never been to Alcatraz before and the first time I was there I swam away from it," Hockett said.
"The swim is no joke," Hockett said of the 1.5-mile journey through cold, choppy waters.
Once he reached Aquatic Park, he changed into running shoes and ran 2.5 miles to the transition area at Crissy Field in the Presidio. The next leg of the event was a 13-mile bike ride on the hilly, triple-loop course through the Presidio.
The final 10K run took Hockett through the Golden Gate Recreation Area and across Baker Beach, where he climbed the 400 steps of the infamous sand ladder.
"The whole race just kills you," Hockett said.
Family: Steve and Melissa Hockett, parents; two sisters, Kiera and Shaynna.
Favorite sport: Running. "It can be individual or with a group, relaxed or intense," Hockett said. "And it gets you outdoors."
Favorite athlete: U.S. Olympic long-distance runner Bernard Lagat.
Favorite hobbies: Running, cycling and drawing.
Favorite subject: Psychology. "I've always been a people person and I like to analyze things, probably too much," Hockett said. "I like to figure out why people act the way they do."
Would like to meet: Former middleand long-distance runner Steve Prefontaine, who is considered to be among the greatest and most inspirational runners of the modern era. He died in 1975.
"He would have been a cool guy to hang out with," Hockett said.
Crowning achievement: Hockett said he's not sure, but added that Sunday's triathlon was clearly the most difficult athletic feat of his life.
Plans: Hockett said he plans to compete in some college races this season and is considering some Ironman events in the near future.
The Athlete of the Week is selected by the News-Sentinel sports staff. Nominations are gladly accepted. Hockett will receive a T-shirt courtesy of Lodi Sporting Goods for being selected.
