Let's start working to find a solution

Monday, August 25, 2008 6:36 AM PDT

In the early 1980s, when a new way of centralizing corporate America emerged, land was plentiful in suburban areas of major American cities, so commercial real estate in those locations was booming.

Centralizing corporate America would allow American companies to save money by preparing them to take their businesses global and afford them a more centralized office location to hire a more educated work force. It was at this point in our history when Americans began commuting to work.

So, what is my point? Our dependence on oil is directly connected to our commuter lifestyles. Duh! Corporate America relies on their employees to get to work every day on time. For employees to get to their jobs and back home every day, they need to fill their cars with gas and oil regularly. Now, I don't know the dollar value and I don't know the gallons consumed, but I can see that to maintain people's lifestyles and livelihoods it will require our dependence on oil for a very long time.

Corporate America's capital investment in centralization is already a "monument," and any hope of reversing the flow and returning jobs to local communities is slim. Worse yet, Corporate America needs offshore drilling, and Corporate America needs drilling in Alaska to thrive as an "entity." Congress needs Corporate America, too. Therefore, is it any wonder that Congress would ignore their responsibilities to begin the process of getting America on the road to reducing our dependence on oil?

I think it is time to stop shifting blame, stop living in denial and start working for the solution. Remove the mental barriers that block our imagination to find a better way. Release the human spirit to raise awareness from dependence on oil to renewable energy-electricity. There is a better way, so let's find it and call your member of Congress today and keep him/her busy helping solve this problem of reducing our dependence on oil. Join more than a million members at WeCanSolveIt.org. Together, everyone can help make the switch from oil to clean renewable energy-electricity.

" They have a gas station in Santa Cruz thats for those engines that run on vegetable oil-used oil at that. It was empty though, thats too bad. The gas in Europe has been so expensive for so long- thats why everyone drives those little mini cars. "

" If it were that simple. Our "dependence" on petroleum goes well beyond what we consume with our modes of transportation. Virtually every aspect of our lives - what we wear; where we live; what we eat; the creation of the very devices that we depend upon; the turbines that turn now in our hydro-electric plants and the turbines necessary to turn to capture the power of the wind, etc. - are all dependent upon petroleum in one way or another. Putting those turbines on the tops of buildings and bridges in New York City will do little more than give the appearance of a Mayor doing something "green."

My problem in all of this is that we are dependent not on just the oil, but our enemies that provide that oil to us. By breaking that stranglehold we increase the actual security of our country. But there are those who actually believe that we will actually all learn to get along as soon as we understand why certain factions around the globe hate us so much. And while we continue with that study, they'll just find other ways to destroy us. "
