Credit card fraud suspect arrested again
A Lodi man who was convicted of using a homicide victim's credit card within hours of his death is back in jail, this time accused of check fraud.
Robert Collins, 34, was arrested late Thursday night at Wal-Mart, 2350 W. Kettleman Lane, when a clerk double-checked a payroll check he was cashing, Lodi police said.
Collins allegedly said the $326 check from Roundhouse Tavern was a paycheck, Capt. Gary Benincasa said after reviewing a report on the incident. The Wal-Mart employee called the Lodi bar to confirm it, and was told that Collins was not an employee and that the check was bogus.
Police arrested Collins around 11:45 p.m., and he was arraigned in court Friday on several other cases, including violating his probation.
Collins pleaded guilty in June to using homicide victim Neal Singer's credit card in March. He was sentenced to two months in jail and was released from custody before a July hearing for the murder suspect, Juan Velazquez.
The defense had subpoenaed Collins to testify at that hearing, and a judge issued a $50,000 arrest warrant when he did not appear.
Collins, who was on probation for the credit card fraud conviction, is also jailed on other previous probation violations, including domestic battery, drug and vehicle charges.
Elkhorn Elementary bus decision set for Monday
Parents will have to wait until Monday to find out whether bus service from Elkhorn Elementary School will continue, said Barbara Johnston, assistant superintendent of secondary education.
She said the district was collecting information and presumably money regarding the proposed pay-to-ride system through Friday. A meeting with Superintendent Cathy Nichols-Washer is set for Monday when a final decision is expected, Johnston said.
The school board already voted in June to cancel service altogether unless it could pay for itself. After a meeting with parents, a reduced plan providing service only after school was unveiled, but 200 paying riders were required to break even for the cost of gas and drivers.
As of Tuesday, only 59 had signed up. Current figures were unavailable Friday.
Galt elementary students return to school Monday
Both parents and students in the Galt Joint Union School District will be busy during the start of this school year. In addition to Monday's first day of school, two campuses are holding back-to-school nights this week, and a school board meeting is scheduled for Wednesday.
McCaffrey Elementary's back-to-school night is scheduled for 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday. The campus is located at 997 Park Terrace Dr.
River Oaks is holding its back-to-school night Thursday, from 6-6:30 p.m. The school is located at 905 Vintage Oak Ave.
