Site near San Joaquin General Hospital may provide outpatient care for Lodi-area veterans

Lodi-area veterans only have to drive as far as French Camp for nursing home services if the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs chooses land adjacent to San Joaquin General Hospital for an outpatient and nursing home.

Currently, veterans have to drive to the Veterans Administration clinic in Livermore or to the VA hospital in Rancho Cordova for medical care, according to Kerri Childress, communications officer and congressional liaison for the Veterans Administration Health Care System in Palo Alto.

"We're extremely excited about this," Childress said. "We'll be able to provide health care services to veterans who have never been able to get it there before."

"I think this is wonderful. We have so many veterans in the Central Valley," said Connie Norton, president of the Lodi American Legion Auxiliary. "The majority of the time, when they want to go to Livermore, they send them all the way to Palo Alto (almost 100 miles from Lodi) for major stuff."

The bad news for local veterans is that the nursing home — most likely to be located in French Camp or Modesto — won't be built until 2015 at the earliest, Childress said.

The idea is to co-locate a 120-bed nursing home with a new multi-specialty outpatient clinic to include radiology, dentistry, mental health and primary care, Childress said.

"It's going to be a very, very large outpatient clinic," she added.

San Joaquin County wants to work with the VA Hospital, said Andy Stone, spokesman for Rep. Jerry McNerney, D-Pleasanton, who has lobbied heavily for the French Camp location.

"They can co-locate with County General (Hospital) so they can share resources back and forth," Stone said.

McNerney gets endorsements from veterans

Rep. Jerry McNerney, D-Pleasanton, has announced the endorsement of Dave Norris of Tracy, past state commander of the California Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Norris is a Vietnam veteran and a member of VFW Post 52 in Stockton.

Also endorsing McNerney are Commander Tino Adame and Service Officer Cary Martin of the Karl Ross American Legion Post 16 in Stockton; Tom Liggett, former commander of the McFall Grisham American Legion Post 249 in Manteca; Lucie Marx Titus, president of the MG William F. Dean Chapter of the Association of the Army; and veterans Jerry Wiggen of Manteca and Eugene Cota, Bill Evans and David Hamm of Pleasanton.

San Joaquin County has offered to lease land adjacent to San Joaquin General Hospital for $1 per year, Stone said.

Childress said that other Valley locations, including Tracy, are being considered, but French Camp and Modesto are the ones heavily lobbying for the nursing home and outpatient center.

"McNerney feels extremely passionate about this," Childress said. "I know he's thrilled that there's going to be a clinic in the Valley."

Existing veterans' clinics in Stockton and Modesto will be expanded in the next couple of years, Childress said.

"This is separate from the new clinics and nursing home and more of a stop-gap to help veterans while the new clinics get through all the funding and construction," she added.

The Palo Alto VA center will be among the agencies that will determine whether French Camp, Modesto or another location gets the nursing home and expanded outpatient clinic.

"VA Palo Alto isn't opposed to anywhere," she added.

The VA has hired a consultant to evaluate each possible location. A decision may be made as early as next year based on such factors as how close it is to major roads, how cheap the land is, proximity of a major hospital for emergency care and how close a majority of veterans are, Childress said.

McNerney, who sits on the House Veterans Affairs Committee, showed committee chairman Bob Filner, D-San Diego, the French Camp site on Monday.

"It would be nice if we could get one down there (in French Camp) because the majority of the veterans are in the Valley here," said Ken Kramlich, service officer and finance officer for the Lodi American Legion post.

"We've been campaigning, talking to the congressman every time we get a chance," Kramlich said.

" Yeah take all that out because it worries me that Patton would know all that about a person. How? Where does one get knowledge about someone's home? And who they are. Is that a employee of LNS? "

" Hi Whoa Nellie! "I chose Lodi because of monthly rent amount, quality of life and the fact that RTD bus from Lodi to San Joaquin County hospital "Where the VA shuttle picks up vets for Livermore or Palo Alto got me there before 7:15 am! RTD CHANGED their bus service run! I would have preferred living at Livermore or Palo Alto but could not afford the rent. Many people live where they do out of necessity! Wouldn't it be a perfect world if we ALL could live where we wanted! I wasn't complaining Nellie, I was just stating my opinion! "

" T & C, I am a vet with acid reflux, heartburn, and IBS. It all started after my time served during the Vietnam war.

You mean to say I can get a Disabled Vet status? Where do I sign up? "

" With all due respect to our friend T & C, if one is to have all of their health care done at VA facilities one would think that you might want live close to such medical site.

I know many other vets who have stayed in our area and not moved out of state to rural small towns due to such a problem.

It's like some of the people I know complaining about living up in the mountains and having to drive 1-2hrs down the hill for full service medical care. Uh, HELLO! "

" And it would be great if you could make your appointment on Tuesday or Thursday. I do volunteer on Mondays, every other Wednesday, and Friday with my Christian brothers and friends to help those who are less fortunate, homeless, alcoholic, addicts or anyone that needs basic help. I'm really not that bad a person at all. You just need to get to know me. "

" T & C, I would ask that you choose the best method to treat the medical problems you have and I'll take you directly there. I have friends in Livermore and could visit with them while you take care of your medical needs. I'm busy the 1st week of September so make your appointment and we're off to see the wizard! "

Sorry for previous typo's! "

" I encourage all disabled veterans in Lodi to join the Lodi Chapter of the D.A.V.! Mr. Brenner's Phone number is 466-4605. Also, if you have a disability claim pending with the Veterans Administration "PLEASE" call the Disabled American Veterans Office and ask for "Representation"! You have a much better chance of being awarded compensation for your injuries then fighting alone! Our servicemen and servicewomen especially in Iraq and Afghanistan are coming back home with many types of injuries! I thank everyone who has served or has a family member serving this country. I hope they'll all come back home soon! "

" As I said before, the AMTRAK TRAIN does go to Livermore, and it is not expensive. BUT, the ONLY way I or any other vet can "GET from Downtown Livermore to the Livermore VA Hospital is BY TAXI"! Cab fare is $30.00 one way! I wish the Livermore VA Hospital had a free shuttle from downtown livermore to the hospital. If I lived in Livermore and had a car, I would provide free transportation to our vets! In comparison, Livermore costs $80.00 round trip without the shuttle. Mathers round trip costs approx. $35.00$40.00. "

" hers is a nice choice and has an Emergency room as well, but one must have the bus, lightrail and VA Shuttle schedule timed "Just right" in order to get to and from an appointment on time.If the Livermore VA Shuttle Van would just "Wait an extra 15 MINUTES"; then once a veteran got off the RTD bus they could catch the VA Shuttle! That would be "Serving veterans with MEDICAL NEEDS"! RTD cut out that EARLY bus run which threw transportation out the window. "

T & C wrote on Aug 14, 2008 4:03 PM:

" or veterans to access the Mathers VA Hospital, Those without transportation must go by Greyhound to Sacramento, find the lightrail station a few blocks away, get off at the "Right stop" so a VA shuttle van can pick them up and transport them to the VA Hospital in time for their appointment, then get back to the VA Shuttle, then back to the lightrail station, then back to Greyhound in time to catch a bus back to Lodi! If they are at the Mathers VA Hospital past 4:45 PM they are stranded because the shuttle to the lightrail stops then. "

" T&C, that is very nice of you to offer and I say thank you. Alkl that is needed is a ride to San Joaquin County Hospital "Before the 7:15 AM VA shuttle Van leaves for Livermore on any given appointment date! I have Three potential Cancer concerns that need to be checked. Prostate PSA is up, I have IBS, and have had Acid reflux for ten years. Acid reflux is a Esophagus Cancer risk, Elevated PSA is prostate Cancer risk and IBS is a Colon Cancer risk! "

" T & C, If you could give me an advance notice I'd be happy to volunteer my services and time and fuel to transport you to the VA hospital in Livermore. Any time, any day. "

" Since they already have a VA clinic on the County Hospital grounds, I wonder just how an "expanded" will improve things. While a bigger clinic will be nice, after reading the description of added services that the new clinic will provide, without an inpatient hospital to handle more serious medical problems, I don't see how there will be that much of an improvement. For Veterans who believe that they are required to go to either Livermore or Palo Alto because they live in this area, this is simply not the case. There is nothing to keep you from utilizing the VA Hospital at Mather in Sacramento. It is much closer to Lodi than either Livermore or Palo Alto. And since it has been recently renovated and expanded you'll find it to be an exceptional facility to receive the care that you so richly deserve. "

" T&C...That's a major problem. This country has to take notice for our Vets. And there are more and more young people that need these services, along with our older Vets. It's a shame! It seems they don't care. After everything Vets have done for this country. "

" As a disabled veteran, if I need to go to Livermore or palo Alto,, the first Stockton Bus to French Camp to catch the FREE VA shuttle VAN arrives at French Camp (5) minutes after the VA shuttle Van has left! I have talked directly to Livermore VA hospital and they REFUSE to alter the VA Shuttle Van departure time! If 5 veterans needed critical Cancer exams and have to use RTD from Lodi, they will never make it in time! I Can take AMTRAK to Livermore but it will cost me $85.00 round trip including taxi to the Hospital. "
