DUI sting nets 53 arrests in 5 hours

A special weekend operation aimed at drunken drivers in Lodi and Stockton resulted in 53 arrests in a five-hour span, the California Highway Patrol reported Monday.

Officers also issued 30 citations in the sting that began at 8 p.m. Saturday and ended at 3 a.m. Sunday, Officer Adrian Quintero said.

Called RAID, short for Rapid Apprehension of Impaired Drivers, the operation was funded with a state grant that paid overtime for 18 officers who worked in teams of two.

They targeted areas that have frequent alcohol-involved crashes, including east Stockton and the northern part of the county. To avoid having to make separate trips to the county jail in French Camp, the CHP officers drove the suspects to their Ad Art Road office off Highway 99, where other officers finished paperwork and then took groups of them to the jail.

Of those arrested, one woman was wanted on a $250,000 San Diego warrant and also had another $125,000 warrant, Quintero said.

The arrest numbers didn't include one final suspect Quintero stopped in Clements after the operation had ended. The man, who had recently left a bar there, tested at more than twice the legal driving limit of 0.08 percent blood-alcohol content, Quintero said.

Truckload of wine stolen in Lodi

Be on the lookout for stolen Lodi wine: Someone made off with a whole tractor trailer containing a shipment of the beverage this weekend.

The big rig trailer was parked Saturday afternoon on Auto Center Drive, near Pixley Drive, when the wine disappeared, according to Lodi police.

The heist happened between 2 and 6 p.m., and police on Monday did not have further information about the kind or quantity of wine, which was inside the stolen trailer.

The Great Dane trailer had "Jeff Co" printed on the back, and police said anyone with information may contact them at 333-6728.

Input workshop on Bay-Delta plan tonight

The California Department of Water Resources will host the first of six community workshops tonight in Galt to get public input on several studies that have been made regarding the future of the Delta. The plan focuses on the possible transport of Delta water to Southern California and habitat restoration.

Today's meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at Littleton Community Center, 410 Civic Drive, Galt. Future meetings will be held on Wednesday in Lathrop, Thursday in Antioch, Aug. 19 in Walnut Grove, Aug. 20 in Rio Vista and Aug. 21 in Stockton. All meetings begin at 6 p.m.

The Stockton workshop will be in Stockton Civic Auditorium's main hall, 525 N. Center St.

Galt schools set to start

Schools within the Galt Joint Union High School District start Wednesday, while kindergarten through eighth grade schools commence Aug. 25. The high school district includes Galt High and Estrellita.

Meanwhile, Galt Joint Union High School District will hold its school board meeting tonight at 6:30. Among the topics scheduled for discussion are the approval of several board policies including those relating to sexual harrassment and family care and medical leave, a contract with the city of Galt for security at school dances and the increase of some meal prices.

Delta College school board meeting tonight

Discussing the recently released Grand Jury report is among the items scheduled for discussion at tonight's San Joaquin Delta Community College District meeting.

Matt Wetstein, interim dean of planning research and regional education, is also scheduled to make a presentation on the college's graduation survey results.

The board meets publicly beginning at 4 p.m. in the board room, administration 103 at the college, 5151 Pacific Ave., in Stockton. The next regular meeting of the Board of Trustees is set for Aug. 26.

More mosquito spraying planned for area

The San Joaquin County Mosquito and Vector Control District will continue ground spraying today.

Spraying is planned for 8 p.m. to midnight in the White Slough area west of Interstate 5 to Rio Blanco Road and south of Highway 12 to Eight Mile Road.

Spraying is also scheduled from 4 to 6 a.m. today in north Stockton between Bear Creek and Ponce de Leon and Paragon avenues, and from Davis Road east to the Union Pacific Railroad tracks.

The district reports 55 dead birds and 87 mosquito samples testing positive for West Nile virus this year in San Joaquin County.
