Man's 21st birthday ends in arrest
A Lodi man's 21st birthday celebration was cut short Wednesday when he began fighting with his friends, who said it was a birthday present, and he was then arrested for public intoxication.
Albert Lara was almost 21 hours into his birthday when he and his friends gathered in the roadway in the 800 block of South Washington Street, Lodi police said. A citizen called police around 8:45 p.m. to report that 10 males were fighting in the street.
Extra officers happened to be conducting a gang enforcement operation in the neighborhood, so they soon arrived and began corralling the 10 males, Sgt. Chris Jacobson said.
Police soon learned that there was no real fight: As part of a birthday activity, Lara's friends had him fight them for fun, Jacobson said.
Lara, who Jacobson said was quite drunk, was arrested for public intoxication and taken to the jail's drunk tank to sober up before being released. Two of his friends were also arrested, one for a misdemeanor warrant and another for public intoxication.
Lodi Lake beach, pool to be closed Tuesdays
The swimming area at Lodi Lake Park will be closed Tuesdays because fewer people have been using the lake now that the public school year has started.
The beach and wading pool will remain open Wednesdays through Sundays, 11:30 a.m. until 6 p.m., and on Labor Day. Admission is $3 for adults and $1.50 for children ages 3-17.
Most Galt Market changes rejected
There won't be any vendor relocations or rental fee changes at the Galt Market, at least not in the near future.
The Galt City Council this week decided the only change it was comfortable with is a time adjustment. Starting in September, the market will run from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It's now open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.
More than 20 vendors opposed to the possible relocations showed up at the council's Tuesday night meeting. Several spoke against the moves, saying they would lose business because customers wouldn't be able to find them.
The relocations would have created a produce aisle in the center of the market, but displaced some longtime wholesale sellers. The council asked city staff to come back with new proposals for the market, which has lost revenue and vendors in recent months.
City officials say the poor economy is to blame for the drop off. Some vendors contend high rental fees have driven vendors away.
City staff had proposed cutting rental fees for Tuesday vendors, and increasing fees for Wednesday vendors.
Armando Solis, the city's market manager, said he will organize a series of meetings with vendors to discuss new ideas.
Vendors and city staff met earlier this summer to discuss the possible changes. The city's parks and recreation committee voted 5-0 last month to support them.
The council Tuesday night also directed city staff to create maps showing where particular vendors are located, and to investigate an automatic payment system for vendors, Solis said.
Vogel wants Congress candidates to debate
Fourth District San Joaquin County Supervisor Ken Vogel, who represents Lodi and the rest of the north county, joined other area politicians in signing his name to a letter calling for a debate between U.S. Congressman Jerry McNerney, D-Pleasanton, and his Republican challenger Dean Andal.
The letter was released Wednesday and called for McNerney to participate in a series of debates with Andal in each city of the the 11th Congressional district.
Mark Thiel, a member of the San Joaquin County Board of Education, also signed the letter.
