Galt family battles cancer, together

GALT— Balloons reading "Welcome home" and "Get well soon!" float at the top of the ceiling and family photos fill the walls. A loving Labrador retriever waits at the front door, and light curtains cover the windows.

At first glance, the Smith family home looks like an ordinary suburban house. However, a sign reading "No soliciting, No exceptions," indicates something isn't quite the same anymore.

Nancy Smith, 39, has lived in Galt since she was eight-years-old. She's made many friends, and says she can't even buy milk without running into someone she knows.

This has come back and been quite the blessing especially since both she and her husband, Dean Smith, are battling cancer.

"I have lots of friends in this town," Nancy Smith said. "More than I can count."

On Nov. 13, 2007, Nancy Smith was diagnosed with colon cancer. Her doctors at the Sutter Cancer Center informed her she was the second-youngest person to have to undergo colon cancer treatment.

In April, while Nancy Smith was receiving treatment, her husband was told he had Melanoma skin cancer. Then, Dean Smith's sister was diagnosed with breast cancer and needed a complete mastectomy.

"We are all fighting this cancer circle," Nancy Smith said.

After completing treatment, Nancy was informed she had a cyst in her left ovary.

Then, the day of the surgery, Nancy heard even more devastating news: The colon cancer that was supposedly gone had spread to her ovaries.

The news left doctors shocked, Nancy Smith said. They had never seen that happen, but knew immediately she would require more treatment.

"I was going through hell, but now I'm going to go through it again, just twice as bad," Nancy Smith said.

Suddenly, friends and family she hadn't heard from in awhile were coming out of the woodwork with support and love.

"You don't realize how many people you know," Nancy Smith said. "First I thought (it was like) I was dying."

Nancy Smith knows this round of chemotherapy is going to be tough, but this time she is going to be tougher.

"I'm not going to die; I've got my boxing gloves on," Nancy Smith said.

She said with her last treatments, she lost all physical abilities and felt so removed from the world it was as if she could see herself from an outsider's perspective.

Smith family at a glance

The Smith family has lived in Galt their whole lives. All three children have gone to the same elementary and high schools their parents attended. Nancy Smith said she has enjoyed raising her family in the town she has always known.

Parents: Nancy and Dean Smith

Children: Brandon, an Iraq war veteran; Jeremy; and Nicole Smith

Galt Family Fiesta Night at a glance

What: Taco bar, dessert, raffle, silent auction, pinata

Where: Littleton Center, 420 Civic Dr.

When: July 26, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Cost: Adults-$8; Children under 8, $5.

And the pain isn't over. This treatment is expected to be harder and more excruciating than before.

With the first round, Nancy Smith was able to keep her thick, waist-long hair.

This time it is going to fall out, but she's OK with that because she has met women through the Cancer Center who lost one or both breasts.

"At least I know my hair with grow back — what the hell am I crying for?" Nancy Smith said.

But, throughout the pain, Nancy Smith is keeping a strong heart. She is scared and tears flow when she talks about how much her family means to her.

"Oh my God, I love my kids. I'm really scared about leaving them," Nancy Smith said. "That's why I've got to do everything I can."'

It is that core group of family and friends who have decided to host the first Galt Family Fiesta Night to raise money for the Smiths.

Nancy Smith's daughter, Nicole Smith, and others have organized a festival fund-raiser for her mother.

"It's fun. I felt I could reach out to (my) mom," Nicole Smith said.

The festival will be held at the Littleton Center, 420 Civic Drive, on July 26. The event will include a taco dinner, silent auction, raffle and piñata.

Cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children under 8 years old. Donations for the Smith family can also be made at Stockman's Bank, 701 C street.

Event organizer Tawnya Hadden said she is not only looking forward to raising money for the Smiths, but also to seeing the community come together in support of a local woman.

"Being able to see what the community can do is just huge," Hadden said.

" WY: I think most of us took your comments as they were intended, which was to mean no harm to the subjects of this article. The photos are a different topic altogether and I know most here know this to be the case. No worries. The Smith's seems to be very strong people with wonderful family and friends. They will get through this awful time in their lives. I just know it. Hey, I'll see you at RELAY FOR LIFE next year! We can walk for the Smith family too. "

" If I send a gift to the Stockman Bank will the Smiths recieve it? Can I send something by mail to them?

I feel bad that I hurt their feelings. I suck. I will take their portrait for free. (I will find them). It will be something they can hang in their home for a life time. I promise with all my heart. I hope they will forgive my comments and except my gift. "

" No I won't, but I have thought about my thoughtless comments on this blog and I have come up with a way to fix my mouth/writing. I won't blog here again, an i will put my money where my mouth is.
Please except my appology for commenting about the photo. I am hell bent on the LNS improving the way they depic humans in their rag. This was NEVER directed towards the Smiths. (I said that to start with) I understand the pain they are in an I meant NO HARM to them. I should have shut my trap,an I am sorry. :(
I have poor judgement at times. "

" WY: You sure seem to have gone the defensive quite strongly for me only having said they wanted to be posed like that.

Would you mind posting some of your work? "

" Sorry... I said I meant no harm to the nice family. I am on a on going grip with the sloppy way people's image has been taken from the reporters. I will add contructive critizium when I see fit. I already said I meant no harm. Can you not read? AND if they really want a nice photo taken of them call me! If you knew anything about what I was talking about you'd agree. I have lost three members of my life to cancer this year, one of them a child. I know all about the pain. Sorry i offened you. "

" Is there any way that we can get the first comment off please. My family is going through enough without some rude person making mean and uncalled for comments about the photo. And on a happy note, I love you both Aunt Nancy and Uncle Dean, wish I could be there for you. Love, Misty "

" The photograghy is better. Posing is bad, but expressions are good. Get the heads of the subjects closer. There's five miles between the people standing and the folks sitting. If your are going to pose a shot, it's on purpose, get it down. If it's a snap well thennn, no biggie, watch for the expression you're looking for.

I know this has nothing to do with this nice family. sorry. I'm stiding for excellence. "

WY wrote on Jul 22, 2008 11:32 PM:

" If the LNS would have reported the story maybe more would have walked and they could have raised 200k more. Maybe next year the LNS can get hooked up with the orginizers and do the story. Why put all these cancer stories in the paper, but not the story about how Lodi raised money for research for cancer. It was huge! duh! "

WY wrote on Jul 22, 2008 11:29 PM:

" What beautiful and thoughtful post. Cancer effects many many people. Thank God there are folks like our Lodi Citizen that will give up a weekend to walk night and day for a cure.

Thank You to all the people that raised the money for

RELAY FOR LIFE.

This money is going to find a cure.
God Bless all of you! "

" I too am a cancer survivor. I can tell that your family has the courage and strength to get through this horrible time. All those that you have touched in your life will help you through this as well. You already sound blessed with a wonderful family and friends. My prayers are with you. Just take it one day at a time. Try to keep your spirits up. There are a lot of us survivors out here as proof that you CAN get through this. God bless. "

" I myself am a cancer survivor. Two years ago I was diagnosed with Stage IV squamous cell carcinoma (head/neck cancer). My odds of surviving were low; but after massive radiation and chemotherapy treatments I am in remission. If ever there was a 'good' time to have this dreaded disease, it is now. The advances in detection, surgery and treatment give those of us affected more than just a 'fighting chance.'

No, I don't know any of you, but we are kindred spirits. You have my prayers and thoughtful support. "
