Shooting suspect arrested for alleged theft of liquor
A Lodi man charged with accidentally shooting his friend in the face missed a court appearance Monday — because he was in jail after being accused of stealing $156 worth of liquor from a grocery store.
Austin Noori, 20, was detained around 2 a.m. Saturday at Safeway, 2449 W. Kettleman Lane, according to Lodi police. A clerk had stopped him as he was leaving the store with a foam ice chest containing Jack Daniels and Crown Royal whisky, Sgt. Dale Miller said after reading a synopsis of the case.
Noori was booked into the Lodi jail and did not appear in Lodi court until Tuesday, a day after he was supposed to appear in Stockton court on the pending firearm case.
In September, Noori and several other young men were in a Rutledge Drive house when he allegedly pointed a stolen handgun at Joshua House, 19, and the gun then discharged, according to police and court records. House underwent several surgeries.
Noori had pleaded no contest to assault and possession of stolen property, but he was mistakenly told that he could possibly be sentenced to probation. When he entered the plea, Noori didn't know that such a felony requires jail or prison time, rather than probation.
He was allowed to withdraw his plea and the case continued. Noori is now facing charges of negligent discharge of a weapon, grand theft of a firearm, possessing stolen property and disobeying a court order.
On Tuesday, Noori was charged in the new theft case with misdemeanor counts of commercial burglary, petty theft and resisting arrest, according to court records.
Racist stickers appear in Lodi
A number of racist stickers were placed in at least two public places over the weekend, an incident Lodi police said is definitely not normal.
The stickers appeared on lamp posts at Hutchins Street Square, and more were found Monday morning on the windows of a business in the 500 block of Lodi Avenue.
The stickers bore the phrase "White Pride" and derogatory references to blacks, Lodi Police Lt. Steve Carillo said. Police have no suspects, he said.
Officers contacted the Breakthrough Project, a group of community members who focus on addressing racism problems. The group formed a decade ago after a cross was burned at Tokay High School, and members are on call so police can contact them immediately.
Beach temporarily closed at Lodi Lake Park
The beach at Lodi Lake Park will be closed to swimmers at least until Thursday because of high bacteria levels in the lake water.
According to a statement released by the city of Lodi, results of water samples taken Monday will determine when the beach reopens for swimming. Bacteria counts in last week's samples exceeded the limits set by public health officials.
Recreation Supervisor Michael Reese said he's waiting on test results to see if the the lake can be opened one more.
"If we hear Thursday we're good we'll open for Thursday afternoon," Reese said.
The wading pool near the beach will remain open for public use.
Normal public swim hours are 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is $3 for adults and $1.50 for children ages 3-17.
