In oversized flag glasses and a Miss America sash, Ellon Madill sports as much red, white and blue as she could. Along with friends, cousins and siblings, Madill helped decorate a wagon in flags and drawings, which she entered into the wagon-decorating contest. (Dan Evans/News-Sentinel)

Patriotic styles abound on the Fourth

Updated: Thursday, July 10, 2008 11:51 AM PDT

While most adults stayed low key and cool in T-shirts with sequined and glittery American flags, it was the children who had fun and used their style to show American pride at Lodi Lake's Fourth of July celebration Friday.

One of the most decorated of the children was Ellon Madill, left, who wore big, tinted American flag sunglasses, a Miss America sash, a red, white and blue shirt and a headband with bouncy, bug-like antennas with glittery stars on the ends.

But there were the occasional adults, like Maria Pottratz, who showed her pride in both the United States and Lodi with a bicentennial lei with red, white and blue flowers.

" I already called some of these big banks and corporations. One assured me they would put one up right away, but it nevcer happened. Why should I purchase flags for big companies and banks, like Bank of America, and McDonald's, who can afford their own flags? It isn't my responsibility to be their patriotism. But I see my responsibility to show where the idea of patriotism is being attacked or denigrated. You are just trying to deflect from the main idea, as usual. "

" Thanks for the slideshow! I personally enjoyed the pictures of how people enjoyed the Fourth. It was great to see the pic of my old teacher, Robert Gross, conducting the Community Band.

Giovanina: Maybe you can donate flags to the establishments that don't have them? "

" Don't worry Gio, nobody remembers Cinco de Mayo on Ses de Mayo because they were too drunk from all the tequila and cerveza. Viva! "

" I, for one, care about the deterioration of the American culture and tradition. If you don't, that is your problem. But I don't need to hear your personal excuses because you don't care or are too lazy to deal with it. Counterpoint or keep it to yourself. People that are truly patriotic in the heart, usually show it, but too many hide it.

Yeah a lot of people let it slip their minds because global businesses and the media did not do much promoting. They did more promotion for Cinco de Mayo. "

" Just cuz I'm not a lemming who wears a lapel pin flag doesnt mean I'm not patriotic. Gio, whats your point? So they have poles with no flag, bfd. "

I was not asking about people wearing pins. Where did that come from? Do you always have to come back with a counterpoint that had nothing to do with my comment just so you have something to say?

Watch your acronyms, traitor "

" I'm all-American as you can get, but I didn't put my flag-pole up this year, it had totally slipped my mind. I say if you're truly an American in your heart, that's all that matters. "

" Isn't that the same car dealer whose big sign in Spanish reads: No insurance, no license, no problem? "

" Even with an Independence holiday, you will not find a U.S. flag flying on the flagpoles of some Lodi establishments. That would be both Bank of Americas in Lodi & Boston Market. These flagpoles cost over $1,000.00 each. And they are no longer used.

In calling BoA, in downtown, about it, they said they have someone who handles the flags. Yeah, right. The invisible man?

In calling Boston Market about their flag, corporate couldn't believe it, and said there would be one there in a few days. I called in April. The flag must be made from the Emperor's New Clothes.

Then you have businesses that fly the Mexican flag on July 4th, and that would include the card dealer on the Southwest corner of Lodi ave, and Cherokee Lane.

Are you tired of the globalists attacking American sovereignty. language, and culture, yet? Not asking globalists and Socialists. "
