San Jose golfer wins Tokay Junior Classic
Stephen Jahncke of San Jose held off a final-round charge by Brian Knoll of El Dorado Hills to capture the Tokay Junior Golf Classic championship on Thursday at Woodbridge Country Club.
Jahncke shot a 4-under 69 on the Lake Course in Wednesday's first round and followed that with an even-par 71 on the River Course in Thursday's final round. His two-day total of 140 was one shot better than Knoll, who shot a 71 in the opening round and closed with a second-round 70, good enough to win the boys 16-17 flight.
The overall girls winner provided a surprise, as Paige Lee of Folsom, playing in the 12-14 age division, finished with a 150 and won by one shot over Shaylee Yano of Reedley, who was the 15-17 flight winner.
Lee trailed first-round leader Emily Talley of Napa by two shots and Yano was three back heading into Thursday's play. Lee and Yano both shot final-round 72s while Talley closed with a 78 and settled for third overall and second in her flight.
Dash Lindsell of Burlingame was second (144) in the boys 16-17 flight and Mark Wyllie of San Jose placed third (144). Locals competing were Kyle Urban (159), Beau Zastrow (163), Nick Serra (177) and Hunter Blincoe (189).
Kurt Kitayama of Chico was third overall (142) and first in the boys 14-15 flight. Locals in the flight included Tyler Leeworthy (fourth, 150), Kit Carson (156) and Brett Thawley (159).
Andrew Bonner of Ripon won the boys 12-13 flight with a 147. Colton Passey was fifth (157).
Travis Winn of Hollister was the winner in the boys 10-11 flight with an 82 and Jason Smith of El Dorado Hills won the boys 9-and-under flight with a 69.
Shawnee Martinez of Modesto won the girls 12-14 flight. Locals competing included Marissa Hinchman (170) and Coby Kooyman (190).
Mabel Wong of Oakdale won the girls 11-and-under flight.
