Pedestrians, crosswalks and the law

Wednesday, June 11, 2008 11:02 PM PDT

Kudos to Doug Gerard and his great letter, June 4, about making lemonade out of lemons.

Walking or riding your bike is a great way to save money, get fit and preserve our environment. I have one suggestion for all of the motorists out there. When you are driving down the road and you see a pedestrian trying to cross the street, remember the law that says pedestrians have the right of way when crossing in a crosswalk. I think some of us in Lodi have forgotten the law.

I live close to the intersection of Turner Road and California Street. Lately, I have been making a conscience effort to walk or ride my bike to the gym. I rarely have any luck getting cars to stop for me while I try to cross Turner Road. I almost feel like some people resent having to take the time to stop for a pedestrian. Hopefully, they have just forgotten that pedestrians have the right of way when crossing in a crosswalk. I want to thank those motorists who do stop! It is greatly appreciated. I always feel a little awkward while I stand at the crosswalk, hoping someone will stop for me.

The next time you are driving down the road and you see a pedestrian or bicyclist trying to cross the street, please stop and give them their right of way. It will make you and the pedestrian feel good. I think it could possibly be considered an act of kindness!

" Why can't I honk at the pickle ladies? I moved to Lodi just so I could drive past them! "

" I always do my best to stop for pedestrians! Sometimes, the peds won't cross, and insist I pass them. I wonder if I could get a ticket for that?

People just need to slow down, and get off the cell phone & DO NOT HONK AT THE PICKLE Ladies!!! "

" I have lived in Washington State, Florida, Maine and now California and I have never ever seen such inattentive drivers in my 54 years! Drivers show a reckless disregard for those in wheelchair scooters, bicycles and those just trying to cross the crosswalk, and Cel Phones are part of the huge danger! "

" That is a dangerous intersection for pedestrians/bicyclists; I wouldn't cross it even IF the cars actually stopped for me to cross. A while back some cars did actually stop for a pedestrian attempting to make her way across Turner. A car coming up from behind the stopped cars (either out of impatience or just inattention to why the other cars were stopped)went around the stopped cars and ended up hitting this poor lady and killing her instantly. No, I'll just wait until it is clear! "
