Milking it
Tokay's Corinne Casey lands scholarship and spot in national milk ad
When Corinne Casey wasn't spending her senior year at Tokay High in the pool, or heading up the Lodi Youth Commission, or burying her nose in a schoolbook, she was applying for scholarships.
"Corinne made it her career as a senior to apply for scholarships," said mother LuAnn Casey. "She literally just looked for everything that she qualified for."
After several rejection letters, however, frustration began to set in for the water polo and academic standout. But when she spotted a scholarship offer of $7,500 on the Internet, one that, if accepted, would end in her sporting a milk mustache in USA Today, that changed everything for Casey.
Within a week of applying, she received an e-mail that informed her she was one of 500 finalists for the scholarship. Then another e-mail came, this one telling her she was one of 75 candidates remaining. When the third e-mail came, she was one of 25 student-athletes selected for the scholarship.
The judges were apparently impressed not only with her well-rounded resume — an impressive mix of athletics, academics and extracurricular activities — but the required essay, which asked, "What role did milk play in your life?"
Casey decided to take the satirical route.
"I happen to be really, really white — especially for a swimmer," Casey said. "So in the beginning of my essay, I basically compared myself to milk. I guess they found it funny."
Funny enough to send Casey to Disney World later this month, where she will receive VIP treatment and get to meet the judges who read her essay.
And not just any judges, but world-renowned athletes Mia Hamm, Tony Hawk, Steve Nash, Andy Roddick and Michelle Kwan. That has Casey more excited than anything else.
"Mia Hamm is my idol," Casey said. "I wear the No. 9 cap because of her."
During her stay in Florida, Casey will take part in a photo shoot with her fellow scholarship athletes, who will all be part of a two-page spread in USA Today sometime this summer — each of them donning a milk mustache.
So Casey must be a big milk drinker, right?
"I'm not, but I guess I shouldn't admit that," she said. "I should probably say, 'I drink five glasses a day.' (My parents) actually joke with me, because I'm only 5-2, that if I'd drank more milk I would have been taller."
Casey, who will study political science and biology and play water polo for Los Angeles' Occidental College this fall, has ultimately received numerous scholarships, including the Italian Catholic and Elk Lodge scholarships.
But she already knows none of them will compare to meeting Mia Hamm and wearing a milk mustache for the entire nation to see.
"This (application) I actually put off until the very last minute," Casey said. "When you start getting rejection letters, it gets frustrating. But it definitely paid off in the end."
And she'll have the milk mustache to prove it.
