Boy suffers head injuries after being hit by car
A 4-year-old boy suffered a fractured skull Wednesday after he darted into East Lodi Avenue traffic and was struck by a vehicle, police said.
All four lanes of the busy road were closed at Garfield Street after the accident, which happened around 1 p.m.
The boy, who is two days away from his 5th birthday, was among several children and adults getting out of a sedan that had parked on the south side of Lodi Avenue, Lodi Police Motor Officer Chris Kauffman said. Adults were helping the children out on the side closest to the sidewalk, but the boy apparently began running across the street, Kauffman said.
The child's mother tried to grab him but couldn't stop him in time, and he was struck by an eastbound Chevrolet Trailblazer. He was pushed by the vehicle as much as 52 feet, Kauffman said.
The vehicle's driver, Megan Walker, 24, stopped immediately and did not appear to be at fault, Kauffman said. Speed was not involved, he added.
Walker had been on her way back to work from lunch and cried as she waited at the scene while officers noted the position of a small shoe and two toys — a car and a blue plastic man — that landed in the lanes.
"He just ran out into the middle of the road," Walker said. "I know he hit his head; I just hope he's OK."
Though the boy was alert and crying loudly in an ambulance at the scene, a medical helicopter was called, as often happens when small children are involved in collisions. If head injuries are involved, children are typically flown to UC Davis Medical Center, as happened Wednesday.
The boy suffered a fractured temporal lobe and ocular bone, said Kauffman, who was waiting early Wednesday evening for an update on the boy's condition.
